Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2023’s who need to be on your radar.
Jasmine Barney Jasmine Barney 5'7" | PG Cedar Falls | 2023 State IA – Cedar Falls
Cedar Falls knew they were getting a great newcomer in Jasmine Barney Jasmine Barney 5'7" | PG Cedar Falls | 2023 State IA , and the Class of 2023 prospect delivered.
Barney helped the Tigers finish 19-5 a year ago, reaching Class 5A state tournament before a tough 51-49 setback to Waterloo West in the quarterfinals.
On the year, Barney finished with 182 points, 108 rebounds, 44 assists, 27 steals and seven blocked shots. She recorded 60 offensive rebounds as a guard, shooting over 41 percent from the field and sinking 23 three-pointers.
Anna Kruse – Dubuque Senior
Dubuque Senior’s Class of 2023 guard Anna Kruse worked out any kinks on the fly, starting 16 games and suiting up in 22.
Kruse scored 139 points for the Rams, adding 68 rebounds, 31 assists, 14 steals and seven blocked shots. She made almost 40 percent of her field goals and 70 percent of her free throws, sinking nine three-pointers.
Emily Naughton Emily Naughton 5'5" | PG Indianola | 2023 State IA – Indianola
Emily Naughton Emily Naughton 5'5" | PG Indianola | 2023 State IA ’s initial season on the varsity team at Indianola showed plenty of promise.
Naughton scored 87 points in 23 games including eight starts, adding 55 rebounds, 46 assists, 24 steals and seven blocks. She shot almost 30 percent from the field and almost 67 percent from the free throw line.
Elly Haber – Dubuque Senior
Dubuque Senior took advantage of some newcomers to the team including Class of 2023’s Elly Haber.
Haber, who appeared in 22 games for the Rams, scored 41 points with 37 rebounds, 23 assists and 11 steals. She knocked down a handful of three-pointers and got to the free throw line 25 times.
Avery Porter – Ankeny Centennial
As Ankeny Centennial looks to the future, one would believe the Jaguars will be leaning on the talents of Avery Porter.
Porter, a Class of 2023 guard, played in 19 games this past season, scoring 24 points with 13 rebounds, nine assists and four steals.
