Rising senior Abby Wrede Abby Wrede 5'8" | SG Cherry Creek | 2021 State CO is a big reason for that optimistic outlook. Wrede’s own future in the sport is a bright one, as well.
On Monday, Wrede announced via Twitter that she has received an offer from the University of Texas at Tyler. The offer is an exciting development for the 5-foot-8 shooting guard, who also has an offer on the table from Metropolitan State University of Denver. Now that she has a pair of good options on the table and with more almost certainly coming, Wrede is beginning to spend less of her recruitment effort on reaching out and more on making pros and cons lists.
“I started this whole recruiting process really early,” Wrede said. “After my freshman year, I started emailing coaches and trying to get something started. Now that I have a couple offers under my belt, my focus is less about getting my name out there and more about starting to look at these schools and figure out if I want to spend the next four years of my life there.”
Known to some as “The Microwave” for her ability to heat up instantly and to others as “The Sniper” for her clutch shooting, Wrede developed a reputation for being a lights out shooter early in her prep career. As a sophomore, she shot 39 percent (39 for 100) from 3-point range and as a junior, Wrede went 32 for 76 (42 percent) from behind the arc.
Her scoring average also increased this past winter to 10.6 points per game and Cherry Creek head coach Clint Evans said early in the 2019 season that Wrede has really developed as a complete player and key contributor at both ends of the floor for the perennial Class 5A state title contenders. Wrede also averaged 2.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals a night in 2019.
Though she shines as a shooter, Wrede is able to play either guard position and has drawn interest from several schools to play both positions. Wrede said she has been in contact with the University of Wyoming and the University of Denver, as well as Western Washington University and Azusa Pacific University. She has also visited the University of Albany and the University of Northern Colorado.
Whether it’s Division I or Division II, and no matter where she ends up geographically, Wrede said she is putting a lot of thought into her decision and her focus is on finding the right fit for her in terms of a program’s coaching staff, a team’s style of play and a school’s academic and lifestyle offerings.
“Right now, I’m trying to narrow down my options and trying to find the right fit for me,” Wrede said. “It’s really good to know that there are a bunch of schools out there that want me to play there and that all my work is starting to pay off.”
Wrede currently carries a 3.6 GPA heading into her senior season. She played club basketball with BC Denver on the Girls UAA Basketball Circuit in 2019 and will play with Colorado Basketball Club’s top GUAA 17U squad this summer.
