The dynamic 5-foot-8 guard can do a bit of everything on a basketball court and certainly has the athleticism to be an impact player at the next level. Word has gotten out about Falcon High’s leading scorer and interest from the collegiate ranks is beginning to pick up.
“I’ve been talking with some coaches and having some conversations,” Burg said. “Obviously, it’s hard not to be able to get out and play and show what I can do. But it’s not like I’m the only one going through it right now. What I’m focusing on is sharpening my skills like dribbling and shooting, and lifting weights so that I’m ready to go when we get back. I just want to stay as ready as I can.”
Burg has drawn interest locally from schools like Lamar Community College, Otero Junior College and Colorado College. She has also been in touch with University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Austin College and Bryant & Stratton-Ohio.
The recent uptick in Burg’s recruitment follows a junior season in which she led the Falcon (17-8) with 14.1 points per game while also averaging a team-best 3.3 steals. An excellent athlete who played quarterback for her school’s freshman squad in 2017, Burg has great speed, quickness and leaping ability, and pulled down 4.6 rebounds a night in 2019-20. She shot 32 percent (23 for 71) from 3-point range on the season and averaged an even 19 points in two Class 4A state tournament games.
Burg has also learned to control her athleticism, improving her ability to change her pace and keep opponents off balance rather than going all out 100-percent of the time. She can guard the other team’s best player and is a hard worker who watches film and does the little things it takes to improve. Currently thriving in her role as a scoring guard, Falcon head coach Tarik Adams said he thinks Burg could transition to a point guard role at the next if need be.
Considering that she came to the game of basketball later than most, Adams also thinks the best is yet to come from his high-ceiling standout.
“She’s getting looks and having people reach out to her,” Adams said. “We’re really trying to get out there because I think she’s a real talent and would do really well at any level from JUCO to Division-II. Hannah just keeps getting better and she’s a little too talented to be overlooked.”
Burg has a 3.4 GPA and said she’s thinking about studying communications or business in college. She may prefer to stay close to home but is keeping an open mind and not limiting her options. But while she and her coaches cultivate her recruiting options, Burg is doing everything she can to prepare for what should be an exciting 2020-21 campaign with the Falcons.
“We only lost two seniors but the makeup of our team is going to be a little different this season,” Burg said. “We’re all just trying to stay sharp because we’re going to be a shorter team without as many tall players. How we play will be a little different but I don’t think it’ll change how good we are. It should be another good season.”
