Overall, the 252 area code and Eastern NC as a whole has some excellent women’s basketball at all levels from middle school to high school and college prospects. Right now, we’re going to take a look at some of the middle and high school prospects who stood out at their latest run.
Zamareya Jones (North Pitt guard, 2024)
Zamareya Jones is a name you’re going to hear a lot when mentioning the top 2024 prospects in North Carolina. She’s excellent in the pick and roll, creates shots for herself and her teammates while also being a terrific defender. Jones has been well known across Pitt County since she started middle school and recently, she’s been playing at the 17U age group for FBC United.
As a freshman, she’ll step right into being the starting point guard for a North Pitt Panthers team that has to replace their leading scorer from the past two seasons. She has the potential to be one of the best players in the country for the 2024 class if she isn’t already.
Aquarius Pettaway (North Pitt forward, 2022)
Rising junior forward Aquarius Pettaway was recently named to Pitt County’s all-area team after posting a double double average at North Pitt. She showed a wide range of post moves that she can go to at any time while continuing to be an aggressive rebounding force. In addition, she’s improved as a facilitator and the Panthers program will need that from her this year.
Pettaway, who most recently played for Team 252 on the AAU circuit, will be counted on heavily next season for a North Pitt team that consistently wins games and has won two state titles in the last five years. Along with Jones, this duo will be one of the best in the county over the next few years and it’ll lead to a lot more success.
Amiya Joyner Amiya Joyner 6'3" | PF Farmville Central | 2022 State #67 Nation NC (Farmville Central forward, 2022)
At this open run, Amiya Joyner Amiya Joyner 6'3" | PF Farmville Central | 2022 State #67 Nation NC , who is one of the top ranked forwards in North Carolina’s 2022 class, also showed that she’s added a lot to her game. She’s already close to unstoppable as a 6’1″ post player who protects the rim, can guard every position defensively, passes and handles the ball like a guard, and is an efficient scorer around the basket.
Joyner, who plays her AAU ball with Team Curry, is starting to knock down three pointers at a consistent rate which could make her a greater force than she already is. After being named the player of the year in Pitt County for the second straight year, she’s expected to be right at the top of that conversation in 2021. With her returning, the Farmville Central Jaguars should be one the favorites in the 2-A division once again which could potentially mean a state title repeat.
