Several teams were able to make a state playoff appearance while also being near or at the top of their respective conferences. One team was able to ride their season long momentum all the way to a final four trip. With that being said, who are some of the top returning guards in Wayne and Greene County to lookout for this season? Prep Girls Hoops NC looks at the best rising senior guards in the two counties.
Kamia Frazier (Greene Central, 2023)
Rising sophomore Kamia Frazier could be in for a breakout season this year for the Greene Central Rams. As a freshman, she stepped into the starting point guard role and excelled at times for an improving program in Snow Hill. She did a little bit of everything from rebounding to creating shots for herself and her teammates. Frazier had a lot of big scoring outputs last season and will be counted on to be the primary option during the 2020-21 season.
Kimora Cox (Wayne Country Day, 2022)
Kimora Cox is a 2022 prospect that has a chance to have a big junior year after being very effective last season for Wayne Country Day. She’s usually tasked with guarding the opposing teams best player and being a threat from three point land. Cox will be a big piece returning for the Chargers this season as they hope she can add an extra scoring punch this year.
Ja’Kea Brunson (Wayne Country Day, 2023)
Maybe the top guard in all of Wayne County this past season, Ja’Kea Brunson helped lead the Chargers back to the NCISAA 2-A final four. In two seasons for Wayne Country Day, she’s already surpassed 1,000 career points and could be on her way to becoming the all time leading scorer in school history. After averaging just under 20 points per game this past season, Brunson will be counted on even more for a great program. Expect her to have a stellar sophomore year and for her recruitment to pick up.
Brittany Butts (Wayne Christian, 2022)
Brittany Butts had a solid sophomore year for the Wayne Christian Eagles helping them reach double digit wins. She’s an excellent defender who posted four steals per contest last season while also being the teams second leading scorer. As a junior, she’ll be a part of a really good team returning for the Eagles and it could lead to another run into the state playoffs.
