Continue ReadingI spent a good portion of my time this weekend watching younger teams play. I really did not watch much of any 17u, I watched mostly 15u and 16u, with even a little 14u sprinkled in there. In this article I will discuss some of the top guards I saw.and what I liked about each.
- Destiny Jackson is a 2025 5’5 Point Guard from Illinois Elite. Destiny is playing up two years with the 15U Gold team and she is more than capable of handling the competition. She is very quick and handles the ball exceptionally well. While she is still small she is not a player that can be pushed around on the floor because of her quickness. She does a very good job finishing with floaters/runners that eliminates the shot blockers. This is a top shelf level player that will be courted by the top programs in the country if she continues on this path.
- Macy Silvey Macy Silvey 5'9" | CG Edwardsville | 2022 State IL is a 2022 5’9 Combo Guard from Edwardsville and Blue Star Silvey. Macy has been on a hot streak this summer and it is hard to miss. Her 3 point shooting percentage for the summer has been hovering right at and just over 50%. Macy was draining everything in pool play including 5 in one game.Being a coaches daughter she is very smart about the game and does the little things well.Macy can handle it enough to play some point or help versus the press and is a good passer that will get the ball in the post and reward your bigs.
- Aaliyah Guyton is a 5’4 2024 Point Guard from Peoria High and Lady Mtxxe. Aaliyah is the daughter of former Peoria High standout A.J. Guyton. She has long arms and legs on her frame and is likely to add some height over the next few years. Aaliyah can handle the ball very smoothly and get in and out of tight spaces. She can shoot the 3, which she likes to do, but is best served right now by attacking off the bounce. Aaliyah can finish with a variety of shots in the lane and use her length to get her shots over her defender.
- Grace Nelson is a 5’7 2024 Point Guard from Altamont and Indiana Elite Havoc 2024. Grace is long and very athletic. She is a track standout and shows the capacity to add a few more inches to her height and some real strength to her body. Right now she handles well and uses her speed to get the ball end to end quickly. Grace can hit the 3 and beat her defender off the bounce in the half court game. Defensively she creates problems with her long arms and quick hands. This is one of the those small town players to watch as she progresses.Grace has some tools that could take her a long way with continued hard work and physical development.
- Kloe Froebe is a 5’9 2024 Guard from Lincoln and the Illinois Elite. Kloe is one of the most skilled players you will see at her age. She handles the ball well, shoots it well, is very patient with the ball and is a willing passer. Kloe comes from a family well educated in the game and so you can see she has been coached very well. With her length she is often matched against smaller guards so she can take advantage of her height to get shots in the lane. As she plays against bigger guards she has a lot of success in the open floor. The 15U Gold team plays at a fast pace and likes to press and that style fits Kloe well. Kloe does a good job making decisions in the open floor and creating shots for herself and her teammates.
- Kristin Edmonds is a 5’8 2022 Point Guard from Anna Jonesboro and the Semo Sizzle. Kristin is a steady ball handler that brings an extra dimension to her team by her ability to score the ball. She does a nice job off the dribble where she can get all the way to the rim or stop and hit mid range jumpers. Kristin has range out to the 3-point line where she can be deadly at times. She is definitely a player to be tracked at the small college level as she is a difference maker on the floor.
There will be much more to come from the USJN WIndy in Indy event over the next few days. There was a high level of talent on display.
