Continue ReadingWest Fargo Sheyenne was one of the surprise teams in Class A last year, replacing a huge chunk of the core that had led the team to the state tournament the previous season on the way to a strong 2019-20 season. After relying on underclassmen and first-year contributors so heavily last year, the Mustangs should enter next winter with the potential to contend toward the top of the EDC.
Go-To Girl: Jadyn Feist
Feist was one of the breakout stars of the EDC last year, going from a role player as a sophomore to one of the best players in the league. The 5-foot-11 forward averaged nearly 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting better than 55 percent from the field. She’s an active presence inside with a solid shooting touch. She should be one of the best bigs in the league.
Breakout Candidate: Alivia Manson
Manson was a solid role player for the Mustangs as a sophomore, showing the potential as a shot-maker and quality defender. She’ll move into a bigger role as an upperclassman with several rotation guards gone to graduation.
Question: Can all the young players take the next step?
West Fargo Sheyenne relied on a lot of sophomores with several freshmen earning regular minutes as well. With those players gaining a year of experience, it stands to reason that they’ll all be better as sophomores and juniors. How much better can they be? If a couple of them take significant jumps and give the Mustangs more depth and balance behind Feist, the Mustangs could be one of the deeper teams in the EDC.
Outlook
In what should be a collectively young and rebuilding EDC, the Mustangs have the on-paper talent and depth to contend near the top of the league. They’ve got arguably one of the five best players in Feist and a host of talented players in the wings. A lot of their success will be dependent on how much improvement players like Manson, Karson Sanders, Peyton Breidenbach and Laura Fagerland make, but the potential for this team is high.
