Elise Boulton Elise Boulton 5'5" | SG Montezuma | 2021 State IA – 5’4 PG – Montezuma HS
A year after scoring 12.7 points a game Boulton is going to need to step up this year to help lead her team back to the state tournament. She is a knockdown shooter from beyond the arc and gets her teammates involved in the game. She’s a guard who can handle the ball in traffic but she’s also a knockdown shooter who can be deadly off-the-catch. Boulton is a quick guard who can get into the lane easily and once she heads to the free throw line it’s an almost automatic point as she shoots it at a 71 percent clip. This summer Boulton worked on a lot to better her game for this winter.
“What I’ve worked on this summer is my ability to create my own shots,” Boulton said. “I know this will be a vital part to add to my game for my senior year as well as in college. I’m also working on attacking the rim to either create shots for myself or teammates, as well as keeping up my 3-point shooting.”
With Shateah Wetering Shateah Wetering 5'11" | SF Montezuma | 2020 State IA (2020, Iowa) graduating, Boulton will need to step up not only in the statistical but on the floor with her leadership as well. She has a big season in store for when we get back to the hardwood and with all the pieces that Montezuma has returning they should see the fruits of that labor.
“This year I’m looking forward to being an underdog,” Boulton said. “This sounds weird, but we know a lot of teams will underestimate us since we lost some talent last year. I’m ready to hit the court with a team that has already grown on and off the court together so much this summer. We are ready to work for our success this year. I’m also excited to play one last year with my sister, Mia Boulton Mia Boulton 5'3" | SG Montezuma | 2023 State IA , and best friend Dylan Holland.”
Boulton is looking to make a decision on her college future in either September or October. She has taken a visit so far to Cornell College and Simpson College and will have one to Coe College this Thursday (8/20). Her future school will be getting a hard worker with the drive to succeed both on and off the floor.
Matayia Tellis Matayia Tellis 5'5" | PG Iowa City West | 2021 State IA – 5’5 PG – Iowa City West HS
Last season Tellis was an integral part to the season that Iowa City West had. She was the second leading scorer on the team with 10.6 points a game and also added in 2.5 assists per game. She improved a lot over the course of her high school career but last winter she took her game to the next level. This summer, she has been hard at work improving her game.
“This summer I wanted to focus on shooting and getting my ball handling tighter,” Tellis said. “By shooting everyday it has led me to be more consistent, and having more confidence in myself.”
As Tellis gains confidence her game will improve even more so. She isn’t afraid of the spotlight as evidenced by a 14 point and seven steal performance in the Class 5A – Region 5 championship game, a loss to Southeast Polk. This upcoming season Tellis is looking forward to getting back on the court and hopefully making a run to the state tournament.
“I’m looking forward to playing a season and playing the best basketball I can,” Tellis said. “Just playing with my teammates and making it to the tournament and giving it all we have.”
Tellis is receiving college interest from a few programs across the region and with a big winter season I would not be surprised to see that expand to more options. She’s a dynamic point guard who plays the game well on both ends of the floor.
Maggie Wilkins Maggie Wilkins 5'7" | PG Knoxville | 2021 State IA – 5’7 PG – Knoxville HS
Wilkins was one of the leading scorers in the entire state last year as a junior on a team that won 20 games for the first time since 2009-10. She scored 23.0 points a game while dishing out 3.8 assists per game. Wilkins is a crafty scorer who can get to the rim but also shoots it well from beyond the arc. Last year she shot 53 percent from the floor and over 40 percent from beyond the arc. With the graduation of Katie Keitges Katie Keitges 5'8" | SG Knoxville | 2020 State IA (2020, Nebraska-Omaha) Wilkins is going to have to step up this season to lead Knoxville to another good season. She has worked on her game this summer and hopes that it pays off for next season.
“I have worked on getting consistent on my shot and defensively,” Wilkins said. “I also worked on passing and getting my teammates as involved as I possibly could.”
Willins makes her teammates better when she is on the floor and improving her passing will further that ability. Wilkins is ready to have a good senior year and hopes that it goes smoothly when things get underway. She’s in line for quite a bit of college interest to head her way if she performs at the level she did last year.
“I am looking forward to actually having a real senior year with playing the sports I wanna play without worrying about COVID,” Wilkins said. “And also having the most fun senior year possible.”
