Continue ReadingWith the season starting in the beginning of January, a lot of players are excited to get back on the floor with their respective teams. Playing a game in which offense is usually the main attraction and defense gets undervalued, defense is the skill set that can win a lot of games for teams, and also earn a lot of playing time for players.
Let’s take a look at some players who can lock down at the defensive end, as well as turn their defense into offense.
Timiya Guevara Timiya Guevara 5'4" | PG Denver South | 2021 State CO (Denver South)
Guevara is a player that can create scoring opportunities off the dribble either for herself or her teammates. She is one of the top scorers in Colorado averaging 22.0 points per game on 167-324 (52 percent) from the field. Recently committed to University of Arkansas Pine Bluff to continue her playing career. She has one more year left with Denver South to continue to show what her school will be getting from her. Guevara is a player that can play on both ends of the floor she averaged 5.8 steals per game, and moves her feet well keeping her player in front. She had a season high in steals totaling 13 towards the end of this past season.
Briasia Johnson Briasia Johnson 5'4" | CG Denver South | 2023 State CO (Denver South)
Johnson is one of Denver South promising young players that has tremendous foot speed. She is a player that shows she can handle the ball through traffic, and is a threat in transition. She averaged 8.1 points per game on 80-192 (42 percent) from the floor. She is a shifty guard that is tough to contain, and can guard among the best of them. She also averaged 5.4 steals, and 5.9 rebounds per game. The incoming sophomore guard had a season high in steals with 11 towards the end of the season.
Tay Williams Tay Williams 5'5" | SG Denver South | 2023 State CO (Denver South)
Williams another one of Denver South promising young players in the class of 2023. She has good foot speed, and also a threat in the open court. She was third leading scorer averaging 14.6 points per game on 151-262 (58 percent) from the floor. She also averaged 5.0 steals per game on a team that has a very talented front court. Williams along with Johnson are the players that Denver South will look to build around as Guevara will enter her last year. Williams also averaged 4.5 rebounds as a guard, and had her first debut with her season high in steals with 14.
Kindyll Wetta Kindyll Wetta 5'9" | PG Valor Christian | 2021 State CO (Valor Christian)
Wetta is a player that loves to go out and compete against the top teams. She is a fierce competitor that will do what it takes to put her team in a position to win every game. She is extremely athletic for her size, and has great foot speed allowing her to sprint in passing lanes to get a easy layup on the other end. Playing on a team that is very talented she is the second leader in points per game, and first on the team leading in steals. She averaged 13.2 points per game on 134-276 (49 percent) from the floor. She also averaged 4.9 rebounds, 4.6 assist, and 4.3 steals per game. Wetta put up a season high in steals in two different contest totaling 8, and over 100 steals this past season.
Ny’Era West Ny’Era West 5'9" | CG Rangeview | 2022 State CO (Rangeview)
West brings a lot of energy to her team on both ends of the floor. She has great length for her size, and has good foot speed making her a threat in transition. She is a player that is consistent every night, and efficient shooting 144-306 (47 percent) from the field. To go along with her length she is also athletic getting her hands on a lot of deflection and steals. West is a versatile player who averaged 16.8 points per game as a sophomore. Turning her defense into offense she averaged 4.3 steals per game to lead her team. She put up a season high in steals with 10 towards the end of the season finishing the game with 33 points.
