“I really do want to play college basketball,” D’Epagnier said. “It has been a dream of mine for a long time.”
Though a select few have what it takes to realize that dream, D’Epagnier showed plenty of signs throughout her freshman season at Longmont that she does. One thing she certainly has going for her is the makings of the physical tools that so few promising prospects simply aren’t blessed with.
An exceptionally fast athlete at 5-foot-8 and potentially still growing, D’Epagnier is also a talented track and field sprinter and it’s a shame she didn’t get a chance to show that with spring sports in Colorado being cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Longmont head coach Wade Kingsbury said he thinks D’Epagnier’s athleticism gives her a valuable floor because it should make her capable of defending at the next level.
As her already solid skill set catches up to her natural athletic ability, D’Epagnier could develop into a special recruit.
“She’s an elite athlete and a gym rat,” Kingsbury said. “She’s looked a lot better this summer and she’s been putting in a lot of work to get better and loves the game. One thing that separates a lot of players is whether or not they live the game and she does. Christine takes coaching very seriously. For a long time, she probably got away with just being a better athlete than other players but she isn’t settling for that. She wants to be coached hard and she wants more and more responsibility all the time.”
Depending on what she wants to do academically and on her development, particularly as a shooter, Kingsbury thinks she could be a fringe Division-I or top tier Division-II prospect. She currently profiles as a combo guard and D’Epagnier is learning to control the game while playing the point and also thrives off the ball where she can run the floor and use her athleticism.
As a freshman in 2019-20, D’Epagnier averaged 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals and just over an assist per game. She shot 21 percent (11 for 53) from 3-point range and by all accounts is a good teammate who helps make her teammates better on the floor.
Playing for BC Denver this summer, D’Epagnier said she is working hard to improve this summer and has high hopes for what she believes to be an up-and-coming Trojans roster.
“I’m really excited for this season,” D’Epagnier said. “We have a bunch of seniors that are looking really good this year and a lot of people coming back that have improved so much. We also have a bunch of freshmen who have been playing club together for a long time so we should be pretty good.”
D’Epagnier added that she has always wanted to go to school in California and UCLA is her favorite right now.
