I have lived in South Florida for about 15 months and get this vibe that it is underrated in terms of high school sports. I could be wrong, but it doesn’t seem to have the hustle and bustle of its neighbors to the south. In all honesty, what part of the nation does.
I have become well aware of the girls basketball talent that resides in this region. Look no further than 2022 superstar Jordana Codio Jordana Codio 6'1" | SF Montverde Academy | 2022 State FL out of American Heritage in Delray. In digging deeper, I would like to highlight more exciting players coming out of the “quieter” part of South Florida.
Lets jump right into it….
Jahnea Midget – Seminole Ridge
The numbers do not tell the whole story in regards to this Florida superstar. 2021 guard Jahnea Midget averaged a double-double on a shorthanded Seminole Ridge squad with six varsity players. The rising senior scored 23.5 points and grabbed 12.2 rebounds per game. Midget has good size at 5-foot-11 that makes her a multi-positional player. Specifically, put her at guard or forward and she is going to make plays. An All-County selection, Midget helped the Hawks to a 19-6 record last season. Against Leonard, Midget scored a season-high 37 points and knocked down six 3-pointers. That barrage was one of four games in which she scored 30 or more points. In 13 other contests, Midget scored 20 or more. The Hawks have a reliable sniper on the floor in any game they play.
Jerivonna Pryor – Oxbridge Academy
2021 Jerivonna Pryor was a key part in the ThunderWolves 16-10 record last season. With three top seniors graduating, her play will be even more apparent as a senior. The 5-foot-9 power forward averaged 6.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game across 26 games last year. In seven games, Pryor posted ten or more boards and had two 13-rebound efforts. In addition, Pryor is a good defender with 47 recorded steals. I see her as a double-double threat this season with more responsibility thrown at her.
Kendra Bentley Kendra Bentley 5'8" | CG Santaluces | 2023 State FL – Santaluces
2023 Kendra Bentley Kendra Bentley 5'8" | CG Santaluces | 2023 State FL did not disappoint in her inaugural season with the Chiefs. The star combo guard averaged a team-best 17.3 points per game across 24 games played. Bentley is also an excellent rebounder at her position, posting 4.6 rebounds per contest. Against Dr. Krop, the rising sophomore scored a season-high 31 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Bentley appeared to get better after the calendar year flipped, scoring 20 or more points in seven of eight games. She will look to help the Chiefs to a winning record in the fall.
Iaisha Suprius – Santaluces
Not to be outdone, Santaluces has another young talent in Iaisha Suprius. The 2023 guard/forward averaged 10.2 points and 4.3 rebounds as a freshman. Against Sarasota, Suprius scored a season-high 22 points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. She is a part of a young Chiefs core that includes 2021 Tyler Debose, 2022 Britney Cherry and 2023 Janessa Williams. With minutes under their belt, Santaluces has a chance to shine with players like Suprius in the fold.
Vanessa Richard – Atlantic
2022 Vanessa Richard is a powerful player for Atlantic in Delray. The 5-foot-11 power forward averaged 9.7 points and 10.0 rebounds across 18 games for the Eagles. We can just call a spade a spade and say she is a double-double threat every-time she steps out onto the floor. Richard recorded just that in nine games played as a sophomore. Against West Boca Raton, the rising junior exploded for 18 points and 19 rebounds. Richard also led Atlantic in blocks with 1.7 per contest.
Mel Garbarsky – Trinity Christian Academy
2021 Mel Garbarsky is one of the best scorers in Palm Beach County. The proof is in the star guards 28.2 points per game, which led all of Class 2A. On a team that averaged just under 42 points per contest, you can see why Garbarsky is highly valuable. In eight games, the rising senior scored over 30 points per game. You have to love a player who can get their points while being keyed on to contain by the other team. Look for her to be a lethal weapon for the Warriors again this season.
