For us simpletons, who do you think I rather see in the paint when I drive to the hoop in a pickup game? Seeing a bigger player in the lane almost always causes me to make a quicker decision. With the game on the line, these scenarios seem evermore crucial.
On the women’s side, South Florida has some fabulous players that fit this criteria. As I stated above, these prospects can be the difference between a win or a loss.
. With that being said, let’s take a look at some other players who fit the definition of a “No Fly Zone”.
Gianna Corbitt – Miami Country Day
If you score against the Spartans, you are going to earn it. 2024 Gianna Corbitt has already played significant varsity minutes as a eight grader for Miami Country Day. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 7.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.2 steals last season. The Spartans also have 6-foot-1 forward Kayla Nelms in the mix. The 2024 Nelms averaged 5.2 points and 4.0 rebounds across 28 games. If that wasn’t enough, leading scorer Andrea Daley Andrea Daley 6'0" | SF Miami Country Day | 2021 State FL is a 6-foot forward. If you put all that length in a defensive set, I am chucking up some bricks. The future continues to be bright for one of the top programs in Florida.
Veronica Edwards – Jupiter
I am willing to roll the dice that Edwards has the advantage in most games she plays for the Warriors. The 2021 is a 6-foot-2 center that averaged 10.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.3 blocks last season. Against Westwood, Edwards scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed ten rebounds. The rising senior added eight other games with ten or more boards. In all honestly, I’m not sure how she doesn’t grab ten rebounds a night. On the defensive end, Edwards blocked 117 shots. Per MaxPreps, the rising senior had ten rejections against Jensen Beach. Unless Lisa Leslie is guarding her, I am funneling the ball to her in the post. The Warriors went 18-9 last season and should uptick that win total this fall.
Karla Quintero – Doral Academy
If you check her highlight tape, you can see why 2022 Karla Quintero is a problem. The 6-foot-2 center is virtually unstoppable when she is down low in the paint. Quintero has the strength and leverage to muscle her opponent out of the way and go up for a shot. Against Ferguson, the rising senior scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds. Overall, Quintero averaged 4.1 points and 3.6 rebounds across 17 games. Look for her to continue to improve as a junior.
Kayla Clark Kayla Clark 6'2" | C Miami Central | 2021 State FL – Central
2021 Kayla Clark Kayla Clark 6'2" | C Miami Central | 2021 State FL is highly productive post-player for the Central Rockets. The 6-foot-2 center averaged 14.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.2 blocks as a junior. Against Lourdes Academy, Clark scored 29 points and 14 rebounds. Per MaxPreps, the Clark posted nine double-doubles on the year. On defense, the Rockets star had five rejections against North Miami. In addition, Clark has good vision and awareness when she is operating on defense. The team captain had 48 steals during her junior year.
Emmy Mills – Dr. Krop
The Lightning went 14-12 last season with 2021 Mills as one of anchors. The 6-foot center averaged 7.6 points and a team-best 9.6 rebounds. In fact, nearly five of her boards per game came on the offensive end. This indicates to me that Mills never gives up on possession and holds good position in the paint. Against Lourdes Academy, Mills scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (nine offensive). She will be a major factor on a Dr. Krop team that returns 2021 Lindsey Weingard Lindsey Weingard 5'6" | PG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL and Lauryn Hornstein Lauryn Hornstein 5'6" | CG Dr Krop | 2021 State FL . The pair combined to score over 31 points per game last season.
