Continue ReadingThe Fargo Davies Eagles enjoyed a terrific 2019-20 season, winning the EDC Tournament Championship and advancing to the semifinals of the Class A State Tournament. With a terrific collection of talent set to return, the Eagles will head into the 2020-21 season ranked in the top-three and should expect to contend for an EDC – and potentially state – title.
Go-To Player: Taylor Fey Taylor Fey 6'0" | PF Fargo Davies | 2021 State ND / Ryleigh Wacha Ryleigh Wacha 5'10" | CG Fargo Davies | 2021 State ND
Fey and Wacha should form the best duo in the state next year. Both earned all-conference honors last year and were integral pieces to leading the Eagles to the semifinals at the state tournament.
Fey averaged 15.2 points and six rebounds while establishing herself as one of the toughest interior scorers. Her efficiency and ability to score from the mid-range as well as in the paint make her an incredibly difficult player to defend one-on-one.
Wacha stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 14.8 points, nine rebounds and nearly four assists in her first team all-state junior season. She’s a big guard who can score from the perimeter, or get to the rim and make plays. She sets the tone for the Eagles on both ends.
Breakout Candidate: Marissa Burian Marissa Burian 5'8" | SG Fargo Davies | 2022 State ND
Burian was a key perimeter piece for the Eagles as a sophomore, averaging about six points per game while providing 3-point shooting. She’s got the ability to take another step and give the Eagles another viable scoring option. With teams likely packing the paint to slow down Fey, Wacha and Ava Wild Ava Wild 6'0" | SF Fargo Davies | 2022 State ND inside, Burian is one who figures to benefit from an abundance of space outside.
Question: Can the Eagles Beat Teams From the Perimeter?
The Eagles have an elite frontcourt with Fey and Wild dominating the paint. Wacha is an excellent slasher who does her best work in the mid-range and at the rim. Brooklynn Koenig Brooklynn Koenig 5'9" | SG Fargo Davies | 2021 State ND , Taylor Safranski Taylor Safranski 5'6" | PG Fargo Davies | 2022 State ND and Burian all figure to play key roles on the perimeter. The formula has worked thus far. But the next move in the game of chess that EDC teams will take is trying to shut down the paint and make the Eagles beat them from the outside. Can they do it?
Season Outlook
There’s a lot to like about this Fargo Davies team. It’s big, it’s experienced, it’s got balance and it’s got two potential all-staters and Player-of-the-Year candidates. The Eagles have as much talent as any team in the state and now, they aren’t relying on freshmen or sophomores. This team should have the depth and balance to be the favorite in the EDC ahead of the season and, if things go right, they’ve got state-title potential.
