Continue ReadingIn just more than a week Kansas’ PGH Top 250 Exposure Event will be held at Okun Fieldhouse, Shawnee. This look at Kansas 2021s committed to attend is the first of a series of player previews to enjoy as we build toward the action. At time of publication 59 players from three states have registered.
Taylor Claussen Taylor Claussen 6'0" | SF Manhattan | 2021 State KS , 6’0″, SF/PF, Manhattan, Wheat State Elite — At the recent I-35 Showcase in Wichita the #85 Claussen generated her share of attention from college coaches. She showed speed, athleticism, finishing ability in transition, quickness, and intelligence. As a defender she gave bigger, stronger opponents fits with her interior defense and with her swift closing out on the perimeter. Expect to see her continue her strong play and climb the ranks come the next refresh.
Amiya Mack Amiya Mack 5'5" | SG Olathe North | 2021 State KS , 5’5″, PG, Olathe North, Kansas Elite 17U Franz — Currently ranked #99 and experienced with the PGH Top 250 environment, having attended the October 2019 Des Moines event, Mack will be looking to show growth and consistency in her game. At that event she showed defensive quicks by stopping a dribble drive; speed, athleticism, and scoring ability off the drive and a nice floater with the smarts to loft it over much taller defenders. In July, at MAYB Reign the Plains, she showed good half court vision and passing ability. She also was noticeably forcing things and was generally very frustrated. Her frustration did not affect her handles but she struggled some to beat people off the bounce. Improving consistency in boxing out away from the shot and how she physically engages in potential action when she relaxes will make her even more formidable. Mack has been offered by Cornel College.
Jordyn Rowe Jordyn Rowe 5'1" | CG Sumner Academy | 2021 State KS , 5’2″, PG, Sumner Academy, SHOtime Basketball/Missouri Phenom — I caught Rowe live for the first time at the September 13, I-35 Showcase in Wichita. Currently ranked #20, she showed a solid ability to blow by defenders in the half court and score on other strong guards. While not possessed of great speed, she is deceptively quick and has good half court vision. The two-time Kansas City Atchison League first team and 2019 defensive player of the year, exploded offensively in 2020. She has solid three point range, can finish with either hand, and distributes well to open teammates including on the interior.
Addysin Scarrow Addysin Scarrow 5'6" | CG Galena | 2021 State KS , 5’6″, SG, Galena — Scarrow heads into the Expo ranked #179. A 2020 KBCA 3A honorable mention and CNC League second team selection, the event will be a great launching pad to raise her class standing. A team captain for two years straight, Scarrow can finish off the bounce with both hands with plenty of air under ball. She also applies plenty of arch on her three point shots.
Lawson Shaffer, 5’7″, SG, Trinity Academy, Next Level Eclipse Stewart — The unranked Shaffer played on the junior varsity during the 2020 season after she was ruled ineligible for varsity play by KSHSAA after transferring from Andover Central. Shaffer brings to the table transition handles with speed, perimeter shooting ability, and a slippery quickness to get into the lane and use her handles to navigate to create shots or distribute. I look for her to land on a lot of radars for programs that will then be following a solid Trinity Academy this season.
Amiah Simmons Amiah Simmons 5'7" | PG Osawatomie | 2021 State KS , 5’8″, PG, Osawatomie, Lady Run GMC/Team KC Hoops — The #18 ranked transfer from Blue Valley Southwest returns to the PGH Top 250 courts. She had a very strong event at the October, 2019, event in Des Moines, Iowa. A 2019 Eastern Kansas League honorable mention selection, she earned second team honors in 2020 as well as Kansas Basketball Coaches Association 5A honorable mention while averaging 18 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.6 steals. She also shot 32% from three and 74% from the line. Simmons is a strong, well-rounded player who can be expected to show physicality, athleticism, quality handles, perimeter shooting, and a quick first step and do it all with speed.
Kennedy Taylor Kennedy Taylor 6'3" | PF Shawnee Mission Northwest | 2021 State KS , 6’2″, C, Shawnee Mission Northwest, KC Dream 2021 — Earlier this week the #2 ranked Taylor committed to University of Colorado at Boulder. Taylor has great size with strength and in the past year she has developed more fluidity and flexibility to her game. After being named to the Sunflower League third team in 2019, while averaging 10.3 points and 9.3 rebounds, she earned 2020 KBCA 6A first team and Sunflower League first team honors while averaging 15.2 points and 9.1 rebounds. In April she was identified as a center to watch over the summer.
Elle Zars Elle Zars 5'9" | SF Mill Valley | 2021 State KS , 5’9″, SF, Mill Valley, Kansas Elite 17U Zars — The #78 Zars also makes a return to a Top 250 event. At July’s MAYB Reign the Plains she continued to show herself to be a fundamentally sound player with good game IQ and floor vision. While not a great athlete she works hard on both ends of the floor and transitions well. She shoots quickly from beyond the arc, is solid in the pick and roll game, is a strong off-ball rebounder, and boxes well. What I will be looking for is to see if she has made progress toward getting a step quicker on the defensive end. Zars holds an offer from William Jewell.
