One of the best things about the event was It provided an opportunity to see several players for the first time this summer. Also great is the opportunity to see prospects in a free environment. Their sense of team, basketball intelligence, defensive mentality, and aggressiveness are just a few things that are easily evaluated in this setting. Here are a few of the new faces that I have not written about this summer and had a nice showing.
Kristyn Goshay Kristyn Goshay 5'5" | PG Heritage-Conyers | 2021 State GA | 5’5″ | PG | Heritage-Conyers | 2021 (featured image) – Goshay is a hard-nosed small point guard. She is a tenacious perimeter defender who makes ball handlers uncomfortable. She has a defensive mentality and relies on her ability to cause turnovers to create her transition scoring opportunities. On offense, she is a pass-first facilitator that showed her IQ by finding teammates in good spots to score and recognizing who had the hot hand. She has very good speed and handles and looks to make the easy play when reading defenses. A proven winning PG that has had a lot of success this summer as the lead guard for the Georgia Pearls Jr. National team, coaches outside of Division I should get in with her.
D’Mya Griffin | 5’9″ | G | Grovetown | 2022 – A big strong guard that can play all perimeter positions. Handled pressure well and used strength to get downhill. She has decent athleticism and showed skill on finishes at the rim. Her length and strength also showed up on the defensive end where she was able to body up guards looking to drive, pick up several deflections on passes, and initiate contact effectively when fighting for rebounds.
Layla Hood Layla Hood 6'1" | C Lovejoy | 2022 State GA | 6’1″ | F | Lovejoy | 2022 – Hood is a long and athletic post player with a consistent motor. Her activity on the interior was constant when on the floor. She is a strong rebounder that reads missed shots well. She showcased a nice mid-range jumper, smart and timely cuts in transition, and the ability to finish through contact picking up extra point opportunities.
Jada Morgan Jada Morgan 5'8" | CG Warner Robins | 2023 State GA | 5’8″ | G | Jones County | 2023 – A young guard that has much more agility than you might initially expect. She showed a good handle and enough acceleration to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim with good finishes. She showed her in rhythm dribble pullup from deep. She also rebounded well from the perimeter initiating the break herself and found teammates in transition a few times.
Sara Lewis Sara Lewis 6'1" | SF Woodward Academy | 2023 State GA | 6’0″ | F | Woodward Academy | 2023 – The long and athletic forward showed a good feel for the game. I was most impressed with her willingness to defend at the rim, rebound, and then run the floor hard. Twice in the game, I watched her score easy layups from just running the floor hard after passing the outlet. She has a good offensive game and scored on the inside and showed a nice jumper. Woodward Academy is going to be a tough team this season with multiple young players coming back with more experience.
Amaya Moss Amaya Moss 5'10" | PF Kell | 2022 State GA | 5’10″ | F | Kell | 2022 – Moss is always fun to watch. Her most impressive skill is her ability to just play winning basketball. She has decent athleticism and skill to go with good length and great floor energy. She has a knack for finding the ball whether she’s chasing missed shots or loose balls. She did well with initiating the offense after recognizing the lanes to push in transition. She is a capable catch and shoots threat anywhere on the floor when given time on open looks. She is a hard worker that enjoys playing the game the right way.
Amaya Johnson Amaya Johnson 5'7" | SG Sprayberry | 2021 State GA | 5’5″ | PG | Sprayberry | 2021 – Another small guard at the showcase that showed a great competitive edge. She has a good understanding of spacing which showed in transition and half-court possessions. She was able to get several good open looks by making some smart decisions when moving without the ball. She also used her jab well and made some strong rips to put the ball on the floor for one dribble pullups. She showed nice scoring ability coming from capitalizing on some good shot selection She is another under the radar point guard that coaches outside of Division I should be looking to track.
