With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top forwards in Region 7
Sam Oase, Hettinger/Scranton
Oase earned all-state honors for the second year in a row last season, averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds per game while helping the Night Hawks reach the state tournament. She’s an efficient interior scorer who hits the offensive glass and finishes everything around the rim. She’s worked on expanding her offensive repertoire – which would make her even more difficult for opposing teams to defend. Hettinger/Scranton is graduating three starters which means Oase will have even more on her plate offensively.
Abbey Kubas Abbey Kubas 5'11" | SF Dickinson Trinity | 2021 State ND , Dickinson Trinity
Kubas averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds last year while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. She’s a matchup nightmare because she’s got the size and strength to take it to smaller defenders while also possessing the athleticism and skill to abuse bigger, slower defenders. Dickinson Trinity is one of several teams that should be expected to contend in Region 7 and Kubas is one of the few players who can legitimately take over a game.
Megan Rising, Beach
Rising earned all-region honors last year as a junior and has emerged as one of the top inside-outside players in the area. At 5-foot-9, she’s got the skill and shooting touch plus the toughness to get inside and finish at the rim. She’s a solid passer, and she’s outstanding on the defensive end of the floor.
Ellie Powell, Bowman County
The Bulldogs won 12 games last year thanks in large part to Powell emerging as one of the best players in the region in her freshman season. The 5-foot-11 forward averaged nearly 15 points and eight rebounds on solid efficiency. Bowman County graduated four seniors but should be competitive in the region this year – and the Bulldogs have a legitimate go-to player in Powell.
Taylar Fagerberg, Heart River
Fagerberg’s been a solid role player each of the last two years and has shown she’s capable of supplying double-double production in spurts. She’ll have a lot more on her plate as an upperclassman with the Cougars graduating several key starters. Her ability to impact the game on the defensive end makes her one of the most valuable posts in the region.
