One should be consistent in their practice, dedication, hard work, and how they treat others, among many other things. As both a coach, athlete, teammate, and individual, consistency paves the road to success. In the words of the great Coach K, “Leaders should be reliable without being predictable. They should be consistent without being anticipated”. These four young women were some of the state’s top scorers during the 19-20 high school basketball season- demonstrating consistency game in and game out in both their scoring ability and other aspects of their games. Here’s a quick recap of their accomplishments and where they may be headed this coming season.
#8: Jayd Sollinger – Ashland HS 2021 – SG/SF (Pictured)
Talk about an all around player, Sollinger delivers in every column on the stat sheet. Her junior season, she averaged 14.7 points, 1.6 assists, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. She is a 5’10” shooting guard and small forward that, when it comes down to it, is simply more athletic than her contenders. Those significant stats in every category come from smart positioning and pure hustle. Jayd comes out of no where to create both blocks and steals and she somehow manages to squeeze between everyone fighting for a rebound just to bring it down herself. Overall, a very efficacious and versatile player that will do well at the college level.
#13: Sydney MacLachlan – Portland Adventist Academy 2021 – SG
McLachlan covers the floor unlike any of her counterparts. Averaging 4.1 steals per game last season, it’s no surprise that a majority of her 13.1 points on any given day are from fast break lay-ins. She is unselfish and a leader on the court, as she also averaged 2.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game last season. You can clearly see a change in the demeanor when she steps on the court as she takes over the game, and her teammates follow her energy and example. Her head is constantly on a swivel, and she flies all over the court on both ends of the floor looking to increase the energy and speed of the game.
#17: Lexi Schofield – Brookings-Harbor HS 2021 – SG
This is the best outside shooter in this bunch, averaging 36% from three last season and 11.6 points per game. Schofield was the MVP of the Far West League in her junior season and was selected as 1st team all state as a sophomore. Her shot reminded me of some of the best outside shooters I’ve seen come out of OSU, like Kat Tudor and Sydney Wiese, as her form is quite unconventional- but it works! My only critique was that I found her shooting off of a pass 90% of the time, not really demonstrating any skill of creating her own outside shooting opportunities. However, she has many other strengths to combat this, as she has a very fundamental box out and crashes for every board, averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. She can also manage well as a small forward, as she powers up well through the key and earns position to attack with a signature step through or power lay-in finish.
#23: Skyla Gonzales – Redmond 2022 – PF
As the youngest mention of the week, Skyla averaged 10.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 1 block per game as a sophomore at Redmond High. Her season high game, she achieved a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Crook County. She rolls off screens hard at a 45 to the basket, giving her the proper positioning for great screen and roll action with her guards. She is not much of an outside shooter, however she finishes through traffic extremely well and is strong compared to many of her match-ups. This is a player to look out for as she begins the second half of her varsity career and battles more opponents.
