For each range I have chosen who I think are the best shooters, rebounders, passers, and scorers – 5-6 players for each category – and identified what makes them successful. Here are the best senior shooters ranked outside the top 50.
Taryn Wagner Taryn Wagner 5'6" | SG Central City | 2021 State NE – 5’6″ SG – Central City
What makes Taryn a deadly sniper is her quick release combined with her high release. Defenders better not shade too far off her or she will make you pay big time, not requiring much space to get a shot off. For Central City last season, the 5’6″ guard hit 30% of her 3-pointers at 8.5 attempts/game! She is a high volume, yet efficient shooter from distance, a rarity at this level. She also shot 77% on free throws at almost 4 attempts/game there. She makes defenses pay night in and night out and should have an exciting senior year.
Hannah Strom Hannah Strom 5'7" | SG South Sioux City | 2021 State NE – 5’7″ SG – South Sioux City
Hannah posted modest numbers last season for South Sioux City (6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists) but thrived role as an off-ball assassin. She shot 34% from distance on 5 attempts/game, and had the smooth motion to match the numbers. She even began to put it on the floor a bit and shoot off the dribble this summer. She is great as a catch and shoot threat, but will become such a tougher guard if she can expand her versatility.
Samantha Moore Samantha Moore 6'0" | PF Mullen | 2021 State NE – 6’0″ PF – Mullen
After turning in a stellar season for Mullen as a junior (17.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists), Samantha will look to lead her team back to the state tournament, and improve on their 4th place finish a year ago. Her game is complete, but her shooting catches the eye. She made 61 3-point shots, 3rd most in Nebraska, and did so at a 31% clip shooting 6.9 per game.
Lydia Hodges Lydia Hodges 5'8" | SG Papillion LaVista South | 2021 State NE – 5’8″ SF – Papillion La Vista South
Lydia proved to be a reliable release valve for the Papillion La Vista South offense last season. She was effective as a screener in the pick and pop, always ready to shoot off the catch. She hit the 3-ball at a 24% clip, but shows both the confidence and shooting motion to improve on that number. There is much more to her offensive game other than outside shooting, and those skills will be complemented perfectly if she reach 30-35% from distance her senior year.
Katie Carpenter Katie Carpenter 5'8" | PG State NE – 5’8″ PG – Lincoln Southwest
It helps to have a quick and direct shooting motion, which Katie has. It also helps to have great balance when shooting the basketball, which Katie possesses. And one of the little things that helps is always being ready to shoot when spotted up off-ball, and Katie makes sure she always is. Her balance benefits her big time when the pass isn’t right in her pocket and she has to lean, or bend, or step to the ball. She is able to rise up with strength without tensing up or disrupting her motion.
Alyssa Eichelberger Alyssa Eichelberger 5'8" | PG O'Neill | 2021 State NE – 5’8″ PG – O’Neill
For O’Neill last season, Alyssa began to show her growth as an offensive weapon. As a 3-point shooter she showed confidence in a spot-up role, but also began to drill some off-the-dribble jumpers from 3-point range and in the midrange. She shot 27% from three last season, and in order for her to improve on that mark I expect she’ll have to work on her shooting mechanics a bit. She shoots from her right hip, and often times leans her torso over to that side on her shot ‘windup.’
