Continue ReadingTuesday morning we posted the first thorough update to our rankings in the Class of 2023 since the end of March. Naturally, there were a number of changes to the list, but we also expanded from 100 to 125 prospects this time around. Below is a look at seven young ladies who are appearing for the first time on the Prep Girls Hoops Indiana 2023 list, and who are the highest ranked at this time of the 25 newcomers to the list.

Gracie isn’t very tall, but her game speaks volumes. She is quick/fast, a nice all-around athlete, and she’s strong for her size. She is a quietly tough kid, always poised with her head up, and she does a nice job of thinking the game and getting the ball where it needs to go. Additionally, if you disrespect her as a scorer, she can bury shots with range or get into the heart of the defense and force it to react. I also like her intensity and willingness to defend. I think she’s a really nice high school player, a quality college prospect, and I think she’ll be one of those kids who goes to the next level and helps her team succeed.

Brooklyn is one of your typical Southern Indiana ballplayers. She has a solid, wiry strong frame, she’s a nice all-around athlete, she competes each possession, and she plays with a good motor at both ends of the floor. She is versatile skillfully, as she can handle a little, drive and attack the basket, or knock down the open rhythm jumper. She is also willing to battle inside and play physical, she rebounds her position fairly well, and she can score it at a high rate in the mid-post. She also has a really nice IQ for the game and a solid all-around feel. Look for her to help Mitchell have a nice run the next couple of years in Class 2A.

Autumn is one of those under-the-radar kids who should start to see a lot more attention this Winter. She is a long, wiry strong athlete who can run and jump with just about anyone in this class. She has speed and quickness, and she plays with a nice motor. She is a no-nonsense competitor who battles equally hard at both ends of the floor, and I think she can turn into an elite on-ball defender with her talent. Offensively, she can handle it a little and score it a little at all three levels, but consistency and efficiency will be key for her to build over the next couple of years. At the same time, she can simply make plays other girls just can’t.

I am really interested in seeing what kind of Winter Lydia can put together for Forest Park in 2020-2021. She is a strong, broad-shouldered forward with good length. She’s a solid one-directional athlete who can get downhill and finish through contact at the basket. At the same time, she has a soft lefty touch around the perimeter, plus she has good enough ball skills to act as a point forward and run offense from time to time. Add to that her effectiveness as a rebounder and her willingness to battle some inside defensively, and she can plug into a number of different systems at the next level because of her versatility.

As an evaluator, you leave different seasons with certain kids making an impression on you. Cristen was one of those kids. I am incredibly intrigued by the combination of her height, her wiry strong, athletic frame, and her ability to run the floor well, get in the air quickly, and make really nice, athletic plays at her size. She has a good understanding of the game and some skill at her size/age, but her physical talent is somewhat unique in this class, therefore she has a really nice ceiling of where she can get with additional skill work and a commitment to the game. I’ll be curious to see how much better she is a year from now.

Maci saw some Varsity action in 2019-2020 for Winchester, but when I saw her earlier this Summer, she looked like a completely different player. She is a fairly strong wing guard, she has a great feel for the game, and she can shoot it with range from the perimeter. I knew she was a shooter when I first heard about her, but I was more impressed this Summer with her ability to put it on the floor and push the ball in transition, plus her vision and passing ability stood out. I don’t know that she’ll ever necessarily be a point guard, but to have ball skills on the wing in addition to being a nice shooter will make her a tough matchup on opponents. She has moved and transferred to Blue River Valley this season.

Based on what I saw this Summer, Catherine would have definitely been a candidate for the all-motor team. We tend to use the word scrappy to describe smaller players, but Catherine was somewhat scrappy as a combo forward. She hustled everywhere, got after loose balls, rebounded outside of her area, plus she didn’t mind being physical and defending girls much bigger than herself. She showed some skill as well, often knocking down 15-foot jumpers, plus she was able to put it on the floor on occasion and attack the basket. I think she has a tremendous amount of value for upper-tier small colleges because of her versatility and intangible qualities.
