Continue ReadingIn this article we take a further look into some new additions and stock risers from the latest update to the 2023 rankings.Sometimes a players stock will rise but their ranking drops. In a case like this it is always due to more new players being added to the rankings. In the first year or two of their high school career many players will emerge and debut at a high spot on the rankings list. This makes a player like Shannon Dowell Shannon Dowell 5'9" | SG O'Fallon HS | 2023 State IL move down in the rankings despite having a good summer and solidifying herself as a prospect. In addition you have players like Briley Rhodes Briley Rhodes 5'4" | CG Okawville | 2023 State IL and Trinity Tingley Trinity Tingley 5'5" | PG Paris | 2023 State IL that show improvement and a well rounded game but are not blessed with D1/D2 ideal height. Because we rank based on where we believe they are as college prospects this may hurt them, but, that does not mean they are not out there working hard to find a way to play at the higher levels. Here we go.
- Shannon Dowell Shannon Dowell 5'9" | SG O'Fallon HS | 2023 State IL is a 5’10 Wing from O’Fallon high school. Shannon is another player that I have covered extensively so I will try to give you the cliff notes version of all I have seen. She is very long and very athletic and this most often shows itself when playing in an open court game or attacking the basket in the half court. With her speed and jumping ability she can impose her will on any given play to accomplish her goal. Shannon recently received a D1 offer from Indiana St and I believe this is the first of many.
- Emerson Weller Emerson Weller 5'9" | SF Edwardsville | 2023 State IL is a 5’9 Forward from Edwardsville. Emerson is a player that competes well in the paint and should provide some valuable minutes to the Lady Tigers this year. She is a very good rebounder that can cover some area as she will go get the ball and not wait for it to come to her. Emerson uses that effort, and good understanding of using her body to create space and angles, to score in the paint. At 5’9 she will need to continue to work on expanding her game to the perimeter to maximize her potential. As a player that has shown herself to be a student of the game that has the desire to get better, I am looking forward to watching Emerson progress.
- Ella Niebrugge Ella Niebrugge 5'6" | PG Effingham | 2023 State IL is a 5’6 Guard from Effingham. Ella is an athletic and especially quick guard that shows a nice competitiveness and toughness to her game. She certainly has skills but her ability to get in and fight against more mature players from good squads was evident this past year. Ella has shown a nice 3-point shot but backs that up with the effort and desire to get on the offensive boards and provide a boost for her team with a stick back. She is a new player to our rankings to keep an eye on moving forward.
- Briley Rhodes Briley Rhodes 5'4" | CG Okawville | 2023 State IL is a 5’3 Guard from Okawville. Briley made a splash on the scene early in her freshman campaign showing off her ability to hit the 3-point shot. She has shown continuous improvement in her ball handling skills and ability to run the team from the point guard spot. This summer she got a late start but joined up with the Southern Illinois Hawks team for some August and September tournaments. Briley had a nice run and made an All Star team in the USJN event.
- Kaylin Williams Kaylin Williams 5'8" | SF Tri County | 2023 State IL is a 5’9 Forward from Tri-County. Kaylin did a nice job contributing off the bench for a team that has made the trip to state an annual right of passage. She is tough in the paint and will fight for rebounds on both ends of the floor. Kaylin shows the athletic ability to play on the wing and be able to guard a 2/3, she just needs to continue to work on her offensive game as a wing. This is often typical of smaller level players that grow early and can dominate in the post as a young player but quit growing and must improve the rest of their game to continue that level of play as they become high school players.
- Jenna Scheller Jenna Scheller 6'3" | C Collinsville | 2023 IL is a 6’3 Post from Collinsville. Jenna has shown good touch around the rim and has a big strong body. She needs to continue to develop confidence in her left hand and become a bit more mobile to max out her potential, but it is really hard to teach 6’3 with some touch. Jenna does a good job of area rebounding as she will box out and grabs the ball with authority.
- Trinity Tingley Trinity Tingley 5'5" | PG Paris | 2023 State IL is a 5’5 Point Guard from Paris. Trinity is another player that showed significant improvement in her game this off season but did not see the reward in the rankings. Her 3-point shot has improved with hard work. The videos are there on her twitter page to show the hours she has put in and the game footage shows the results. Trinity has nice handles and is a good coach on the floor. Her college potential will be maxed out by working on her strength, agility and quickness to get the most of her frame. She can also continue to focus on the mid range game to beat any defense that tries to take away her outside shot.
We are looking forward to seeing these girls continue to expand their game and show what they can do on the floor as high school sophomores.
