Continue ReadingPlayers in the 2021 class especially have been effected by the pandemic and enthusiastically have taken to the limited opportunities to compete and attend camps and events over the summer and fall. Efforts to help players gain exposure by Prep Girls Hoops Kansas has resulted in a July ranked list composed of 233 players. More will be added with the upcoming refresh. Expect a November release of that update. Below is a list of five unranked players that can be expected to appear in the refresh. Many more remain on the watch list, including some who earned all-league honors last season, due to not enough information being readily available.
Malgosia Byczkowska, 5’11”, SG, Independent,
Next Level Eclipse
— A season ago Byczkowska averaged 13 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 2 assists. She also made 40 threes on 34% shooting. The returning Central Plains League honorable mention had a solid MAYB Reign the Plains event but overall could use improved quickness.
Lawson Shaffer, 5’7″, SG, Trinity Academy, Next Level Eclipse — Shaffer had a strong showing at the recent Kansas PGH Top 250 Exposure Event. A transfer from Andover Central a year ago, she was ruled ineligible for varsity play by KSHSAA and spent the season on JV. Blessed with a solid build, she handles well, is shifty on the perimeter, shoots well with range, and plays hard on both ends.
Avery Rosenhagen, 5’7″, SG, Norwich — Rosenhagen was an important cog in the Eagles run to the class A state tournament. While she can run the point where she was most effective was as a consistent three point shooter with ability to shoot with distance and in flow off the catch. She also has the hand speed defensively to pick a ball handler one-on-one.
Lexi Valle-Ponds, 5’2″, PG, Newton — A returing starter for the Railers, Valle-Ponds can handle with speed. She looks to box on teammate’s perimeter shots well. Would like to see more arch on her shot.
Marah Zenner, 5’6″, PG, Newton — While she has verbally committed to Neosho County for volleyball, on the basketball court Zenner plays hard on both ends of the floor and was the team’s best ball handler at the MAYB Summer Kickoff.
