The Way Basketball and Coach/Founder Deonte Tatum held an exciting league on Sunday that will run through November 8th. The league is stacked with talented prospects who compete against and with one another. Take a look at players who stood out on film from Week 1.
Jayla Butler Jayla Butler 5'6" | PG Milwaukee School of Languages | 2022 State WI | G
Butler is a dynamic, play-making point guard that brings much excitement to the game. She is a speedy true point guard that is at her best when she has a step on the defender or can create space. Butler proved to have a plethora of options that she can use to finish at the rim as well. She has an impressive step back that is so effective for someone her size. She finds gaps in the defense well, and she either wiggles through tem or threads the needle with a finesse pass to the open man. Butler has great footwork on defense and did well pressuring coast to coast. Her high energy is super contagious to her teammates as well.
Jordana Reisma Jordana Reisma 6'2" | SF Brown Deer | 2022 State WI | F
Reisma continues to stand out for her ability to impact on both ends. Her ability to get up and down the floor doesn’t go unnoticed and she is consistent at finishing in transition. Reisma does an exceptional job keeping the ball high and finishing over top of the defense. She has great upside on the defensive end and has proven to be an effective shot blocker and intimidation in the lane. Her long wingspan will give Reisma the ability to lockdown defenders and alter shots at the next level. Her face-up skills are continuing to really improve as she becomes more confident handling the ball and moving through the offense.
Ja’ Cia Cunningham | G
Jacia is an athletic guard with loads of potential for the future. Her explosiveness is one of her best natural attributes, and this causes her to play bigger than she really is when attacking the lane. She is quick vertically and laterally, so she should blossom into a lockdown perimeter defender that can also challenge opponents attacking the rim. She makes impressive reads defensively due to her instincts as well. Cunningham’s athleticism in the open court is something to see- she is one of the best transition players in her class, and that is not an overstatement.
Alexis McNack Alexis McNack 5'9" | PG Milwaukee Lutheran | 2021 State WI | G
McNack has such a unique and well developed game. A good portion of her production comes from her sprinting ahead of the defense with or without the ball and finishing at the rim. This type of hustle is rare for such highly rated prospects nowadays. McNack plays with a chip on her shoulder- even though she is ranked prospect, seh comes to play with passion each game. She very much takes the game personally, which is a sign of a true competitor. She is an impressive play maker and can create a game through her ability to pass. McNack is continuing to develop as a shooter and can really knock it down from deep.
Nakiyah Hurst Nakiyah Hurst 6'0" | PF Milwaukee Academy of Science | 2022 State WI | PF
Hurst is extremely versatile and proved to be a three way scorer in the league on Sunday. She is a versatile power forward that has a great frame and skill set for the modern post player. She has plus mobility that allows her to play on the perimeter and produce from range. She moves very well for her size; and she can easily play and defend multiple positions. Her versatility will take her far- this is exactly where the modern game is trending towards. She will be able to stretch the floor and defend multiple positions at the next level. Plus lateral quickness for her size should give her the ability to guard on the perimeter without being a liability.
KK Arnold KK Arnold 5'10" | PG Germantown | 2023 State #8 Nation WI | PG
Arnold is a composed true scoring guard with great ball skills. She’s fantastic in the pick-and-roll- she can attack, pull up for a jumper, or dish to the screening big man. Specifically, she is very elite at “jamming” the trailing on-ball defender after the pick. Arnold changes speed from fast to slow in order to keep the defender on her back and/or potentially draw a foul. Arnold has great patience with the ball and confidence, which is arguably one of her greatest attributes. She is so incredibly comfortable with the ball that she can make the defense do whatever she wants. Her pace and flow freeze the defense, and it’s really beautiful to watch because it shows great skill and maturity.
