Continue ReadingIt felt great being back in the gym for the first time since the shut-down this past weekend and the tournament did not disappoint! There was some really impressive talent at the DMV Jam Fest — a two-day basketball tournament in Sterling, VA — hosted by BIG TIME HOOPS. The information below covers the first weekend of the tournament held on October 3 and 4, which was the first of three weekend events. It highlights the top four players from the class of 2023.
Skai Bayless – #0 | G | Team Takeover
Skai is a dominant all-around guard who can be effective at either guard position. She can bring the ball up under pressure, and never gives up her dribble until she is ready to make the right pass to initiate the offense. Skai also has a quick first step and a nice stop and go move that allows her to penetrate at will, creating shots for her teammates while also making difficult shots going to the basket, often times finishing through contact.
Nyla Thomas – #6 | G | Team Vito Pink
Over the course of the weekend, the most confident shooter of the class of 2023 that I witnessed was Nyla. She can hit the three from a step beyond the 3-point line, as well as shooting with a hand in her face. Nyla is also a great catch and shoot player and a steady shooter who knows her team needs her to score and is unfazed by her misses. Also, once her defender catches on to her ability to shoot she has a quick enough first step to get by and penetrate into the lane were defenders collapse, and she’s able to kick the ball back out to her teammates.
Lyndsey Costigan – #33 | F | Vogues National Team
Lyndsey demonstrated her ability to perform under pressure and came through in the clutch for her team. Saturday night, during a hard-fought game against Lady Supreme, she stepped up her game in the second half when her team needed it most and was down, and eventually got the win. She is a versatile forward who can post up as well as catch and shoot from the perimeter, forcing opposing defenses to stretch out, creating lanes for teammates to cut.
Trinity Turner – #1 | G | Team Takeover
Trinity is a tenacious on-ball defender who led her team in steals. She is a natural at pick-pocketing her opponents and has very active hands. Predominately playing point guard for her team, she has tight handles, blow-by speed, and an ability to penetrate. Trinity is also a great fastbreak finisher, who can leak out quickly on fastbreaks and finish lay-ups with ease.
Looking forward to covering these athletes during the next DMV Jam Fest weekend. Check back in at Prep Girls Hoops for more coverage from the DMV Jam Fest #2 on November 7 – 8, 2020.
