This includes Maryland, which boasts some of the best collegiate women’s basketball programs as well as some of the best high school girls basketball programs in the nation.
In our look at high school girls basketball in Maryland, here are five juniors you should watch in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) A Division.
Farrah Peterein, SG/SF Archbishop Spalding: Peterein is the perfect mold for a sharp-shooter from the perimeter and someone who can score just about anywhere on the court. She’s a fantastic three-point shooter, and looks confident shooting from the perimeter. She plays aggressively on both sides of the ball, which on defense, helps contribute to a lot of turnovers and fast break opportunities.
Delaney Yarborough Delaney Yarborough 6'3" | PF McDonogh | 2022 State MD , C McDonogh: At 6-3, Yarborough is a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball and for good reason. She doesn’t just play the traditional center role as is listed as her position. She very much plays like a stretch five, someone who can shoot with some range and is agile and can move around the court with relative ease. That being said, she does live in the paint, whether that be getting putting up close shots or blocking incoming attempts. However, that ability to move around a lot allows her to get open and her teammates to be open more.
Daimoni Dorsey Daimoni Dorsey 5'7" | PG St. Frances Academy | 2022 State MD , CG St. Frances Academy: Dorsey looks to continue the pipeline of St. Frances alumni to the NCAA and beyond, helping to take over the duties of Angel Reese Angel Reese 6'3" | SF St. Francis Academy | 2020 State MD , the No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2020. Dorsey, who averaged nearly 7.0 PPG last season, will have the ball in her hands much more often. Having put up seven double-digit performances for St. Frances, there’s a reason to watch out for her, with a clean shot, handles and a strong defensive game, having averaged just over 0.5 steals per game. Expect all of her numbers to skyrocket this season.
Joi Chaney, PG Archbishop Spalding: Chaney plays with a certain type of tenacity which allows her to really show out and show off. She shoots the ball well, especially from outside and looks like she shoots it with relative ease. She’s a facilitator, selfless with the ball. If the opportunity isn’t there for her, she’s dishing it off to a teammate, and she seems to like playing in an up-tempo style on both sides of the ball. That allows her to create havoc anywhere on the floor.
Nekhu Mitchell Nekhu Mitchell 6'0" | SF McDonogh | 2022 State MD , SF McDonogh: Mitchell might be a small forward on the depth chart, but she has all the qualities of a guard and more. She can shoot for one and isn’t afraid to shoot. She shines on defense, a hard-nosed defender who will sacrifice her body for possession, but also just a smart on-ball and off-ball defender. It has paid off, recording several multi-steal games last season. Mitchell is poised to continue to do that and more next season, so be on the lookout.
