In Maryland, it’s been a recent restart with Governor Larry Hogan’s executive order to allow high schools to start preparing for winter sports seasons in the safest way possible.
Prep Girls Hoops will be previewing this upcoming season in full depth and as part of our coverage, here is a look at five juniors in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) C Division to watch this fall and winter.
Anna Kent, PF The Bryn Mawr School: Despite being listed as a power forward on the depth chart, Kent is much more of the traditional center archetype, though she’s quite agile on the court. Her height allows her to back down defenders and if they try to pass around her or shoot over her, she’s stealing it away or blocking it aside. Kent is a force to be reckoned with and as she grows into her size more, gets her feet more firmly planted on the ground, she has the potential to be a double-double machine.
Rian Cully, PG Indian Creek: Cully looked very confident in her point guard more and more as the 2019/20 season wore on. She was someone who wanted the ball in her hands to control the game speed and to start scoring opportunities. She’s an efficient scorer and passer, but arguably her greatest asset is her defensive prowess, where she’s able to record steals in bunches. That’s a testament to her playing well both as an on-ball and off-ball defender and her not being afraid to play up and play aggressive.
Allie Cohen, C Beth Tfiloh: Cohen has cemented herself firmly as a stretch five, helped out by her ability to create turnovers and pick off passes on defense. She likes playing a more fast-paced game, pressing a lot on defense and getting down the floor quickly to get herself open for a pass down low. She’s a great passer and plays selflessly, not afraid to dump it down low or throw a long outlet pass, trusting herself and her teammates. Cohen will be featured more this season for Beth Tfiloh, so she will, now more than ever, create havoc on the floor.
Maya Carnes, PG Friends School of Baltimore: Carnes is a scorer, pesky defender and facilitator wrapped up into a fast, versatile point guard who plays with aggression and tenacity. She has a great shot selection and is willing to very quickly give up the ball. Carnes helps start and finish a lot of fast breaks due to her either creating a turnover from a steal or sprinting down the floor for an open look. She’s a point guard who can score and she’s going to be an expected team leader and captain for Friends this season.
Sarah Martin, G/F Indian Creek: Martin was a reliable, go-to scorer for Indian Creek last season, regularly getting herself open on offense to create great looks for scoring opportunities. Her height has allowed her to be a perennial double-double machine, which will be expected of her a lot more this season. Martin will be crashing the board early and often and will be continuing to give Indiana Creek great scoring opportunities down low.
As the season continues to inch closer and closer, watch out for more player profiles and player/team previews from Prep Girls Hoops.
