I was lucky enough to work this great event and coach any team that came to us on court 3. Because of that I could only see players who played on that court but here our my seven underclassman standouts from the event.
Faith Carson Faith Carson 6'4" | C Buchanan | 2023 State MI 6’4 Buchanan 2023-Glad I finally got to see Faith play in person after watching a lot of highlights this summer. Has great hands and finishes well inside with either hand. Runs the floor well and is a great rebounder and shot blocker. More of a true back to the basket post player, which I happen to like. She has received a lot of attention lately, Michigan State offer among them, and she is only going to get better.
Bridget Crombie 5’10 Home Schooled 2023-Bridget was either lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it, that her team played all three of their games on the court I was coaching at. So bad news is she had to put up with me all day, the good news is I got to see a good young player a lot. She handles the ball well, can shoot it from the outside, and makes good decisions with the ball. She is versatile and can guard anyone inside or outside and she has three more years of improvement to go.
Zar’ria Mitchell 5’6 Saginaw Heritage 2023-Tough lead guard who pushes the tempo and pressures the ball on defense. Does a nice job of getting to the basket and then finishing while also being able to make an outside shot. She is also a willing and very capable passer. She may not be the tallest girl in the world, but she does have long arms which really helps her on defense both on and off the ball.
Taryn Jackson and Emma Bruwer 5’6 Lowell 2024-So I cheated, and added these two Lowell freshmen teammates, and I can really cheat and talk about Summer Havey, 5’4 2023 who played Varsity as a Freshmen, and talk about how they make a great young guard rotation for the Red Arrows. But back to Emma, she had a great game when she was on our court and shot the ball well while also handling it and making some good decisions and some nice passes. Taryn also surprised me when I saw she was only a Freshman; she is a tough lead guard who got to the basket and played good hardnose on the ball defense. She also showed she can knock down the outside shot.
Kara Bartels Kara Bartels 6'3" | PF Zeeland West | 2023 State MI 6’3 Zeeland West 2023-I was lucky enough to see Kara play two of her three games on the day and I really like her game and even more the potential to what she can become. Super long and has a soft touch around the basket with both hands. Has a great up and under move and great foot work for a young post player. She showed she can step out a little bit and shoot it as well and I would expect as she gets stronger and gains more confidence, she is going to be even harder to stop in the paint.
Maya White Maya White 6'0" | PF Farmington Hills Mercy Hills | 2023 State MI 6’1 Mercy 2023-Had some great blocks during games, a few that were more like Volleyball spikes, though she said she does not play Volleyball. She is long and runs the floor very well and can score with either hand. Rebounded and defended of course very well but showed she has an offensive game as well.
Kaylee Glidden 5’9 Pennfield 2023-Smart basketball player with a high IQ. She showed she can handle and pass the ball well without question, but the most impressive part of her game for me was her shot making ability. She moves well without the basket and gets her feet set and ready to shoot before the ball arrives so she can get her jumper off quick. The result is usually a swish and run back on defense.
