Continue ReadingWest Fargo Sheyenne was one of the surprise teams in Class A last year, replacing a huge chunk of the core that had led the team to the state tournament the previous season on the way to a solid season. The Mustangs relied heavily on underclassmen and first-year players last year. The growth a lot of those players showed could lead to improvement this winter.
Go-To Girl: Jadyn Feist Jadyn Feist 5'11" | PF West Fargo Sheyenne | 2021 State ND
Feist was one of the breakout stars of the EDC last year, going from a role player as a sophomore to one of the best players in the league. The 5-foot-11 forward averaged nearly 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting better than 55 percent from the field. She’s an active presence inside with a solid shooting touch. She should be one of the best bigs in the EDC and has all-state potential.
Breakout Candidate: Alivia Manson Alivia Manson 5'7" | SG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2022 State ND
Manson had a solid sophomore season for the Mustangs, averaging about six points per game and showing potential as a shot-maker and defender. She’ll undoubtedly have a more prominent role in the offense as a junior with a couple of key guards from last year gone to graduation.
Question: Can all the young players take the next step?
West Fargo Sheyenne relied on a lot of sophomores with several freshmen earning regular minutes as well. With those players gaining a year of experience, it stands to reason that they’ll all be better as sophomores and juniors. How much better can they be? If a couple of them take significant jumps and give the Mustangs more depth and balance behind Feist, the Mustangs could be one of the deeper teams in the EDC.
Outlook
In what should be a more top-to-bottom competitive EDC, the Mustangs have the on-paper talent and depth to contend near the top of the league. They’ve got one of the best players in Feist and a host of talented players in the wings. A lot of their success will be dependent on how much improvement players like Manson, Karson Sanders Karson Sanders 6'0" | SF West Fargo Sheyenne | 2023 State ND , Peyton Breidenbach Peyton Breidenbach 5'7" | PG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2023 State ND and Laura Fagerland make, but the potential for this team is high.
