A little over a week ago, teams from all over Indiana were allowed to begin their first official practices. Beginning next Monday, November 2nd, teams are permitted to begin official games. With that said, who are the best teams in Class 3A for the 2020-2021 season? Below I have attempted to answer that question as best as possible. This preseason outlook is based solely on how I think teams will stack up this season. Past success isn’t meaningless, but year-in and year-out rosters change, players graduate, Freshmen arrive, and other players transfer. Teams can slide up or down the competitive scale for any number of other reasons as well. In Class 3A, that can be magnified even greater, as just a couple of players can shift the balance of power in the State Tournament.
The Class 3A State Finals showcased two teams with nice stories. State Champion NorthWood surprised a lot of people along the way, handing out upsets and controlling games with their teamwork and structured systematic play. They showed that you can still use an inside-out approach in today’s age of dribble-drive and 3-point shooting. Salem, on the other hand, played the entire season without arguably their best player. Still, they made it to Bankers Life Fieldhouse and had a chance to win a title. This season I would potentially look for a new State Champion, as NorthWood suffered heavy graduation losses. Salem will still be competitive in the South, but schools like Silver Creek, Evansville Memorial, Brownstown Central, Heritage Christian, Washington, and Vincennes Lincoln are all worthy opponents. The North will be wide open for someone to take the reins. Norwell is competitive every year, and they have experienced depth this season. Mishawaka Marian and South Bend Washington are talented younger teams on the rise, and Knox put together an impressive record last year and returns everyone. With so many unknowns, Class 3A should be a lot of fun to follow in 2020-2021.
PRESEASON POLL
1. Silver Creek (21-4, 2019-2020 Sectional Runner-Up)
The Dragons are as rich with backcourt depth as just about any team in the state, regardless of class. But it’s a frontcourt newcomer who could take them from a quality team to a state title contender. I’ll start with the backcourt, as Silver Creek returns Senior guard

She has drawn her share of Division-I interest already. Rooney is a strong, physical guard, she can knock down shots at all levels, and she’s strong attacking the basket and finishing. Kirchgessner is a long, slender, but fluid wing who can handle it and shoot it a little for them off the bench. But the big news is the addition of Louisville Eastern transfer

Her presence both on the boards and in the paint defensively could help push them towards Indianapolis in February. Watch out for the Dragons, as they will be strong in both girls’ and boys’ basketball in 2020-2021.
2. Evansville Memorial (22-4, 2019-2020 Sectional Champion)
Memorial is seemingly always good and talented, but this might be one of their most balanced and experienced groups I can remember. 3. South Bend Washington (19-8, 2019-2020 Sectional Runner-Up)
If we were playing a 3-on-3 tournament, the Panthers might have the best chance in the state of winning that. Their talent gives them quite an edge when it comes to matchups during the Winter, but in order for this program to return to the success it saw during the Skylar Diggins days, they will need to play just a bit more efficiently when it comes to games against their top opponents in the North. They are very close, though, and I’d expect for them to take a nice step forward this Winter. Junior forward

(3.0p, 5.5r, 1.7b). She has a broad frame, a great deal of length, and she works hard at improving. She still needs some work, but she has only played for a couple of years now, and she has made tremendous strides since even the end of last Winter. Another nice piece to the puzzle for Washington will be the addition of South Bend St. Joseph transfer Shamarah Allen. The Junior wing sat out last season, but she is a tremendously athletic presence who can fill it up from all over the floor.
4. Norwell (22-5, 2019-2020 Regional Finalist)

She recently committed to Bethel University. Fuelling is a strong, tough-nosed, versatile guard. She is a very good perimeter shooter, but she’s also effective at attacking the basket, getting defenders on her hip, and drawing fouls. Look for those two to be the clear leaders once again this season. From there, Senior guard Lauren Bales is a nice water-but type of playmaker. She can run/create offense, she’s a capable perimeter shooter with deep range, and she will get after opposing ball-handlers defensively. Senior post Grace Bradtmueller is a very physical presence in the paint, as she provides rebounding and help-side defense from the interior. Junior guard

She can score the ball at all three levels, she’s a willing and capable defender, and she will absolutely run through walls for her teammates. Noel is a long, wiry strong, fluidly athletic point forward type of player. She can handle it in transition, even initiate the offense at times, but she’s also a capable shooter/scorer from the perimeter. She just has a natural feel for the game and a nice smoothness to her play. Ratts was their top sub a season ago, and she brings a tremendous amount of energy and athleticism off the bench. She is a run-and-jump athlete who can score it inside, in the mid-post, or chase down rebounds all over the floor. She’s also a versatile defender who can even guard most wings. Senior guard Callie Backherms (4.1p) and Junior guard Macie Tomlinson (2.0) are both skillful, efficient perimeter players who have played a nice role in the past. Both will look for expanded minutes this time around. Also watch out for Senior post Olivia Weber (3.4p) inside. She is a strong, powerful, and extremely physical post who loves to seek contact. Listen, last year when Miller went down with her injury, everyone counted Salem out. This season, I’d expect for them to step up to the challenge once again and get to 20 wins for a fourth straight year.
