That said, I was still lucky enough to see a ton of talented young prospects make names for themselves. I was so impressed with the way all of these players and teams were able to persevere though a nontraditional summer season, and the individuals who balled out on the court are deserving of special recognition.
With that in mind, I wanted to highlight some of the best under-the-radar guards I saw this summer.
Shelomi Sanders | 2022 | 5’7” Shooting Guard | Rockwall Heath HS – Sanders is a terrific three-and-d prospect. She is a sniper when she has the opportunity to spot up in the corner. If defenders over pursue her while closing out, she showed that she can put it on the floor and attack the basket with success. On defense, Sanders is constantly engaged and plays with a chip on her shoulder. She moves her feet and stays in front of her opponent. Her off ball defenses is solid as well.
Annabelle Burnett | 2022 | 5’4” Shooting Guard | Texas LoneStar White | Plano West HS – Burnett is a high IQ player. She understands spacing and plays with excellent pace. She is a great finisher at the basket, especially in transition. The Plano West junior showed good body control and balance when attacking on the break and isn’t afraid to take a few bumps along the way in order to earn trips to the foul line. I really like her shot selection too, always mixing it up and rarely forcing a bad look from the field.
Lexie Purcell | 2022 | 5’6” Point Guard | Rockwall HS – Purcell plays with great energy and has a high motor. This is one of those players who isn’t going to give anything less than 100% when she is on the court. She never takes a play off. She is a generous distributor who rarely allows the ball to stick to her. Her vision is good, and she doesn’t seem to have any trouble finding teammates in advantages scoring situations. The 2022 floor general is also a scrappy defender who hustles back in transition. I love the way she competes at both ends.
KK Jones | 2023 | 5’7” Combo Guard | Texas LoneStar Black 16U 3SSB | Denton Guyer HS – Jones is another really talented two-way player. I love her activity on defense. She gets down in a stance and defends from start to finish. On offense, she has a diverse skillset, attacking defenses in a variety of ways. The Denton Guyer guard handles the ball comfortably and can hurt opposing teams with her shooting or her playmaking. Don’t be surprised if the sophomore cracks our Texas 2023 rankings in her second season as a varsity starter.
Victoria Flores | 2023 | 5’9” Point Guard | Pro Skills 16U Black | L.G. Pinkston HS – Flores loves to push the tempo. She makes smart decisions when leading the break. The L.G. Pinkston point guard gets downhill in a hurry but never looks out of control. Her vision is outstanding in transition and in the half court. She had some brilliant finds during The Prime Event a few weeks back that genuinely left me speechless. Additionally, Flores possess good length for the one-guard position and is a disruptive defender when playing zone defense, constantly getting into passing lanes for steals and deflections.
Sheridan Silvers | 2023 | 5’9” Shooting Guard | Midlothian HS – Silvers only needed a half of basketball to impress me. She proved that she isn’t afraid to take and make big-time shots, evidenced by a beautiful pull-up three pointer late in the contest to force overtime. The 5-foot-9-inch two-guard can bury contested jumpers from mid to deep range and shoots well off the bounce and from the catch. She is a shot-maker. Beyond that, Silvers does a nice job of attacking the basket, drawing contact on her drives, and converting her free throw attempts.
