This competition really stands out as you start going up into the central and more northern parts of the state, getting closer to the border of New York and near New York City.
Prep Girls Hoops is going to be taking a closer look at the area, going to the Greater Middlesex Conference for juniors to watch out for in the 2020/21 high school girls basketball season in the first of a multi-part series.
Madison Robel, C Middlesex: Robel is of two junior standouts in the low post for Middlesex who is going to dominate this season. She far and away led the team in rebounds last season and was the only player on the Blue Jays to record 200+ points and 200+ rebounds, averaging 10.6 RPG. She is a monster in the middle and is on track to average at least a block a game this season just based off the success she had in 19/20. It’s going to continue in a major way and she’s going to be one of the best forwards and centers in the conference.
Kaylin Nepton, PF Middlesex: Nepton is the other half of the Middlesex junior controlling the middle of the floor this season. She shows off a much greater range on the floor and can shoot from the outside. She’s able to shift out to the point on defense and rattle the opposition and play a versatile role when she’s on the court. Nepton will cause turnovers on defense from steals due to her great court awareness and do expect her to be crashing the boards more often this season for Middlesex.
Tiffany Fischer Tiffany Fischer 5'7" | SG South River | 2022 State NJ , SF South River: Fischer and her sister, Ashley, were absolutely lights-out for South River last season, helping in a big way to the Rams’ 22-5 record. Fischer was a combination of an elite outside shooter, a great passer and a sound defender. She averaged 5.2 APG last season and 14.5 PPG, almost putting up double-double numbers for the season, plus she averaged 3.6 steals per game, an absurd 99 total steals in 27 games in 2019/20. South River will be without two key players who graduated in the spring, so Fischer, more than ever, is going to be the go-to shooter on the perimeter and the person to cause havoc on defense.
Ally Clarke, SG/C Spotswood: Clarke was the leading rebounder and scorer for Spotswood last season and her production is expected to increase that much more come January. She averaged just over three blocks a game in 19/20 while also being the second-leading three-point shooter and the returning leader for the Blazers. That deadly combination of lock-down defense, blocking and the ability to shoot just about anywhere on the court is going to carry Sportswood this season. Clarke’s ceiling is only going to increase over the next few months to stay tuned.
Molly Malague, G Metuchen: Malague nearly averaged a double-double last season, with 16.2 PPG and 9.4 RPG. She was by far the leading scorer and rebounder for Metuchen and that should continue this season. She’s also a deep threat and can shoot the three really well. She has an effortless shot and a great touch with the ball. Malague is going to continue to be an elite passer and someone who will create key turnovers in crucial moments and if Metuchen is going to compete with the best in their division and the conference, she is the key to their success.
