My words may seem harsh at times yet no one’s time is more important than mine and I hate wasting it because those few minutes may cost me see who’s #NextUp because “talent is everywhere” providing you know what you’re looking at yet with the countless number of experts, the abundance of those seeking publicity or attention, warranted or not, this at times has become a joke and at the end of the day, many won’t be laughing so I stand by what I say, see, write and here are some of the freshmen players that have just made the transition with ease in the Houston area
Gwendlyn McGrew Gwendlyn McGrew 6'0" | CG Pasadena Memorial | 2024 State TX
McGrew is playing inside for Dobie on the defensive end yet she’s playing multiple positions on the offensive end yet with her athleticism and college ready body right now, there was no doubt in my mind she was going to “get it” immediately and she has been “giving it” as well. Her NBA range, her attacking the rim from the wing or just getting a rebound and going coast to coast and finishing after contact is something I’ve grown accustomed to so it’s no surprise yet she’s also getting a taste of the “physicality” in high school ball and hasn’t flinched as I knew she wouldn’t
Justice Carlton Justice Carlton 6'1" | PF Seven Lakes | 2024 State TX
Carlton is proving something already, she understands how to carry a team as well as controlling a game on both ends. She has good hands and footwork and finishes powerfully on the inside yet she also can score facing the basket and her attacking from 10 feet has gotten even better. She’s so strong and watching her battle over the “club seasons” as well as her mannerisms told me something early as she leads bu example and what’s even better is that she’s nowhere near where she’s going to be
Ma’Riya Vincent Ma’Riya Vincent 6'0" | SF Cy Springs | 2024 State TX
Vincent is “long and athletic” and one more time, that’s the base yet she’s rounding all four with ease because I’m going to add ultra-athletic to her abilities as she does things so fluidly that it’s just scary on what she’s going to be. She can jump out of the gym, major shot-blocker as well as deflects and (or) alters but watching her run the floor, on both ends to receive the ball and finish, to handle herself and finish, or to get back on defense has taken me back to yesteryear but let’s not forget she’s already becoming a dominant scorer
Kendall Sneed Kendall Sneed 5'7" | CG Hardin Jefferson | 2024 State TX
Sneed has been filling in blanks since I first saw her a few years ago at the #AllEyezOnMe Individual Showcase followed by the Tyrone Johnson Showcase and like those “must-see” events for me, she too has become a “must-see” and watching her progression, as well as maturity on the court early, told me what was coming as she has become a mid to long-range threat, taking players off the dribble or just taking the game over in crunch time and watching her set the defense up via Twitter to attack the rim for the win still has me smiling
Heather Baymon Heather Baymon 5'6" | PG Langham Creek | 2024 State TX
Baymon is faster than a speeding bullet, with the ball and her savviness and desire just keep getting better, and watching her come from behind players to get steals is something I knew was coming. I also knew her pull-up jumper. among the best in the state, right now, would be hard to handle, as usual, I was right but she never takes a play off, she understands the game and will keep getting better on both ends of the floor as she is no ordinary freshman
