Earlier this year we reported several travel team mergers. It appears the travel team mergers and movement are not done. Here are some updates on recent events.
Florida United Coach Amanda Boswell burst onto the scene with her new travel program several months ago announcing the new program and a 16U roster consisting of several players moving over from other programs including 2023 Olivia “Liv” Fuller and 2024 Beckham Hockley Beckham Hockley 5'7" | PG Sickles | 2024 State FL . Well it now appears, Fuller and Hockley are on the move again, announcing on twitter that they will now be playing for FGB. With Fuller, Hockley and friends making up the core of the Florida United 16U roster, it us up in the air what will happen with Florida United. Stay tuned.
BlueStar Orlando Basketball
Florida United was originally announced to be headed by Amanda Boswell and be a joint effort with Joel Vega. That partnership didn’t last long as Vega departed in October. It now appears Vega is bringing back Blue Star Florida announcing on twitter on November 12 “We return for our 8th season in 2021. Home to nearly 100 young women playing / have played at the next level. Several BSFL coaching staff members return + 4 former NCAA Women’s Basketball Players on staff. Over 40 Alumni in our mentorship program. Roster spots open.”
As mentioned, Vega has previously overseen BlueStar Florida as well as been involved with FGB, South Beach Elite and most recently Florida United and B4B. In its early stages of assembling its rosters, it is unknown who will be playing with the program but it does appear Gateway HS teammates 2023 Vanessa Diaz and 2024 Malayna Stevenson will be rolling with Vega and Blue Star Orlando Florida Basketball.
FGB Orlando (Formerly DME/Orlando Future Starzz)
Last year Orlando Future Starzz Director David Collazo merged with DME Academy’s Travel program and Michael Panaggio. It appears Collazo is taking his program on the road again, announcing a merger with FGB forming the newly named FGB Orlando. Established in 2016, Collazo has built up a competitive girls youth basketball program in the Central Florida / Orlando area including 2025s Alahni Lovett, Pinky Sturdivant, Kali Barrett and 2026s Ciara “Cece” Hayes, Kennedy Guy.
Joining Collazo is Shrell Chamberlain who is currently the basketball director at Geneva School and has previously been the Varsity Girls Head Coach at West Orange HS and served as 17U Head Coach of FGB teams in the past.
The program seems to putting together rosters quickly as often many of these rosters don’t start forming till after the new year. But with a crazy 2020 that has thrown the travel season into a roller coaster, many athletes and parents are anxious to have some direction for next season.
