While some of these players certainly scored at a high level, they contributed in rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots. Not everyone can score the ball, someone has to run the show, defend and rebound the ball. Here are a few kids that showed off those skills in week 1.
- Anna Finley Anna Finley 5'6" | CG Owensville | 2022 State MO is a 5’7 2022 Point Guard from Owensville. Anna had a good start to her season, especially on the defensive end of the floor. She did a great job in passing lanes picking off errant passes and turning those into instant offense. Anna had a double double in both games. The first game it was 23 points and 10 steals and the second game it was 24 points and 12 rebounds. She is a hard worker that is going to make hustle plays and play smart. After 2 games Anna is averaging 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6 assists and 8.5 steals per game. (Drops the mic).
- Carlie Vick Carlie Vick 6'2" | C Westminster | 2022 State MO is a 6’2 2022 Post from Westminster. Carlie is most likely not happy with her shooting the first two games, she has certainly had better nights planned for her junior season. However, she has college offers not just based on her ability to score, but to affect the game in many ways. So, when you look at her 9 rebounds per game, 3 blocks per game and her 1.5 steals and assists per game, the big picture becomes much more clear. Carlie will certainly average more than 8 points per game and shoot better than 31% from the field, bet the farm on it.
- JaNyla Bush JaNyla Bush 5'4" | PG Link Academy | 2024 State MO is a 5’5 2024 Point Guard from Whitfield. JaNyla is a special player that already has a D1 offer from Missouri St entering her freshman season. She has shown why with her early season efforts in stepping into the lineup for a talented team returning seasoned players. Through 3 games last week JaNyla averaged 8 points per game and 6.3 assists. Most importantly she is controlling the ball and has an assist to turnover ratio of 3 to 1. Her shooting has just been average for her but that is not going to be her focal point for this team. Now, with that said, she will have some open looks while other teams look to slow down big time scorers like Blakemore, Rhodes x2 , Nelson and Jackson. So, if she can hit 35%+ from behind the arc it will be huge for the team. Either way, if she plays that quarterback role and controls the ball and hits the open player, she will be a big part of the success at Whitfield.
- Jasmine Gray Jasmine Gray 5'9" | CG Pattonville | 2023 State MO is a 5’8 2023 Guard from Pattonville. Jasmine had a nice game in her first outing for Pattonville after transferring in from Hazelwood West. Jasmine had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals in her debut. She has shown a high level of athleticism and a motor that allows her to make effort plays to go with her talents. Jasmine will get the most out of her sophomore campaign if she can continue to shoot the ball at a high % like she did on opening night and also limit her turnovers. Like any young guard in a fast paced game she tended to turn the ball over a little too much last year, so her ability to limit those will be important in her growth.
- Eliza Maupin Eliza Maupin 6'3" | PF Webster Groves | 2022 State MO is a 6’3 2022 Forward from Webster Groves. Eliza is a recent commit to Kansas St. that has great length and is very smooth around the basket. She does a good job of staying active and finding open space on the offensive end. Given the chance she can also step out and hit the 3-point shot. Defensively her length can be a problem for most teams as she protects the paint. Eliza averaged 12.5 points per game on a very efficient 58% from the field and grabbed 8.5 rebounds per game to start off the season 2-0. Her 3.5 blocks per game and 2.5 steals just adds to the story of her defensive abilities.
- Jessie Blaine is a 5’11 2021 Forward from St. Dominic. Jessie had a huge game in her opener for St. Dominic after transferring in from California. Her mother, DJ ,is the new coach and Jessie is a talented basketball player that will be playing college softball for Auburn next season. After averaging 17 points and 11 boards a game in San Clemente last year this athletic forward went for 23 points and 20 rebounds in the opening loss to Westminster. Her 20 rebounds included 11 offensive boards where her constant effort and motor helped cover up a tough shooting night.
