Christmas time is a time for many good things. When it comes to Prep Girls Hoops Indiana, it’s a time for our midseason update to our rankings in all graduating classes. Not only will we be updating our rankings, but we will also be expanding our rankings. In regards to the Class of 2022, specifically, we will expand from 175 players to 200 players, and it will be the last time we expand the Junior class until June. With that said, as we extend the list by 25 spots, I wanted to take the time to preview five young ladies who are currently outside of our Top-175, but who are sure to make it once we expand to 200 players. This isn’t everyone who will be added, obviously, but these five have really stood out over the Fall or already this Winter since we posted our last update in September.
Isabel Davis, 2022, 5-7 PG, Bishop Chatard H.S.
“Izzy” kind of snuck up on me at the PGH Indiana Top-250 Expo in October and was outstanding. She has a fairly strong frame, she’s a deceptively athletic guard, and she plays with great body control and shiftiness. What really surprised me most was that she had this nice, almost Raggedy Ann look to her, and then she would just completely blow by defenders with a quick, tight handle and advanced dribble-moves. Not only that, but she absorbed contact well getting through the lane, showed a little bounce, and finished through contact as well. She will need to shoot it more consistently outside, but she has real ability with the ball in her hands.
Lily Ernstes, 2022, 5-8 SF, Jennings County H.S.
Lily is the sheer definition of “scrapper”, and she’s a kid who probably honestly doesn’t get her fair share of attention, including by us. She is a nice all-around athlete, she plays with a great motor, she has some length, and she has a wiry strong frame. She may not be elite in this class at any one characteristic, but she is one of the more consistently productive kids in 2022, and she can do it just about anywhere on the floor, wherever her team needs her most. She can play a little inside, rebound, and defend “bigs” if necessary, but she can also handle, shoot, score, and defend outside like a wing as well.
Andrea Justis, 2022, 6-0 C, Columbus North H.S.
Year-in and year-out, Columbus North has great depth and solid all-around ballplayers, so at times kids get to their Junior years with little fanfare. Andrea is one such kid, but she put together a really nice grassroots season this Summer/Fall, and she has given the Bulldogs solid minutes already this season. She has a strong, athletic frame, she plays with a really nice motor, she rim-runs hard end-to-end, and she is willing to be physical, sit down, and seal. She has solid hands, decent footwork, but the next step for her is to become more instinctual on the block offensively. She is also a hard-working, willing defender.
Jasiah Scaife, 2022, 5-9 CF, Muncie Central H.S.
“Jasi” is the younger sister of Jayla Scaife, who is currently starring at the University of Dayton. Jasi is a little shorter and less offensive-minded when compared to Jayla at the same age, but she certainly has a lot of that raw, athletic talent that runs through the family. She has some length, a wiry strong and toned frame, she can change ends of the floor quickly, and she is very bouncy. Last year, she really got it rolling towards the middle of the season, but through three games this year, she’s already averaging 12.0 points and 13.7 rebounds. If you watch her play, she flies out of nowhere for rebounds. She’s also versatile defensively.
Jayda Shannon, 2022, 5-8 SF, Tindley Accelerated H.S.
Jayda is another really nice athlete who I had the opportunity to see in late-June up in Fort Wayne. She is long, wiry strong, and she seemingly glides effortlessly around the floor. She is a slashing scorer first and foremost, so she will need to continue working on her perimeter shot. But she can get to the rim in one dribble, change directions, and finish around height/length. I also think she has the physical makeup to become an elite defensive player, both on and off the ball. With her length and athleticism, she should be able to dictate which way the ball-handler goes, while also affecting passing lanes from help-side.
