The High School season has kicked off. We will check in with teams all around the state with an outlook on their season and a breakdown of some of their top players. This week we take a look at Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, FL.
Team Outlook
Northeast High School, which has made the post-season 6 of the last 7 years, returns 2 starters and 4 players from last years team. NEHI will be led by 2021 Meya King who averaged nearly 14 points a game in the second half of last season. The other returner is 6’0 Center Carolyn Harris, who is projected to be one of the top Forward/Centers in Pinellas County. She’s worked hard over the pandemic on expanding her skills and has stood out in the first 3 games of the year thus far.
Katilyn Race returns as the outside sharp shooter and defensive specialist. Her overall game brings a strong consistency to the line-up and a bigger role from last season. Moving up into a larger role as well will be 2022 Tamara Moragne, who was a dominant JV player and brings travel ball experience to the team.
2021 Arkivia Elias will get a chance to start after working hard the last 2 years to diversify her game. Her quickness in transition is something the team will be looking for. 2022 Mikayla Jean moves up from JV and her experience at all the positions mixed with grit and toughness is something the team feeds off of.
NEHI is in one of the toughest districts in the state with perennial powerhouses Bradenton Southeast and Clearwater. The squad is always well coached by veteran Florida coach William White, and they will continue each game. They rarely got outworked and are always a much improved team by the end of the season. Look for NEHI usually to build to become a highly competitive and consistent team and likely have a different leading scorer most nights. They will bring an unselfish style of play based on ball movement, sharing the basketball and a team first attitude.
We will look to cover the entire state. If you would like us to do a preview or scouting report on your team, just email me at WholeyPrepHoops@gmail.com.
