There is an immense amount of great talent across the Garden State and competition this season should be as intense as ever.
Prep Girls Hoops has been taking a look at the best players in New Jersey and that continues in this article as PGH profiles the top guards in the Shore Conference, more specifically the A North region.
Dani Schlesinger Dani Schlesinger 5'9" | CG Marlboro | 2022 State NJ , Marlboro: Schlesinger was one of the best players on Marlboro this year and has taken that next step as a veteran team leader going into her junior season. She averaged just under 11.9 PPG with 6.5 RPG, 2.5 SPG and 1.4 made threes a game. She is part of a strong backcourt coming into 2021 and despite losing a four-woman senior class going into this season, they have the majority of their firepower coming back, including Schlesinger, who is one of the best perimeter shooters in the conference and part of a dangerous outside trio for the Mustangs.
Jada Rogers, Long Branch: Rogers is unquestionable leader going into 2021 for the Green Wave and is their lone returning double-digit scorer. She averaged 11.5 PPG last season for Long Branch, along with 1.9 made threes a game and just over 1.0 SPG. She was a consistent and efficient scorer and has an effortless stroke from the outside. Rogers game is balanced, a healthy mix of inside domination and perimeter shooting. That has opened up another level to her game and in 2021, watch for Rogers to develop her passing game more and improve on defense.
Emily Tran, Freehold Township: Tran, a senior, is an x-factor on this Freehold Township team, one of their two best shooters from the perimeter and the one who runs the point for a very balanced scoring offense. She averaged 5.6 PPG last season but averaged over one made three a game and will continue to build on her outside game. Freehold Township is returning their entire starting five, which is going to make them one of the teams to watch throughout the conference, but Tran should average close to double-digit scoring in 2021.
Grace Leary, Howell: Leary is Howell’s leading returning scorer this season and she was quite the electrifying player in 2019/20, averaging 12.6 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.5 SPG and 1.2 made threes a game. She is their best outside shooter and best overall scorer and she can score basically any way she wants to on the offensive end. Two things to watch out for this season are how she rounds out her game when it comes to rebounds and assists and how she continues to improve her defensive game. Now in her senior season, Leary is the leader on this Howell team and as she goes, the team will go.
Maddie Bideaux, Freehold Boro: Bideaux, now going into her junior season, is the key to Freehold Boro’s success in 2021. She averaged just over 10.0 PPG and 2.5 made threes a game in 2019/20 and was one of a few bright spots for a team that went 3-18 last season. She’s only a junior, which means that she’s only going to continue to dominate and improve, possibly averaging as high as 16.0 or 17.0 PPG once her senior season finishes up. For now, Bideaux will help lead this team and will be an elite outside shooter.
