If you want to find the best talent in the country, look no further than the Garden State, which is stocked to the brim with elite players and intense competition.
Prep Girls Hoops is your one-stop source for the best coverage in New Jersey and PGH continues their look inside the state in this article, profiling the top guards in the Shore Conference, more specifically the A South region.
Rachel Capua Rachel Capua 5'9" | SG Jackson Memorial | 2021 State NJ , Jackson Memorial: Capua was a massive key in Jackson Memorial’s 23-4 record last season, averaging just under 19.0 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.2 SPG, and 2.3 made threes a game. What’s crazy is that she wasn’t even the highest scorer on her team, but she’ll be taking over that role in 2021 and will be a 20+ point scorer for the Jaguars. Not only that, but Capua will probably be averaging somewhere between 3-4 made threes a game too and could even put up double-double averages as the floor has opened up for her to dominate on the glass.
Alexis Voorhees, Brick Memorial: Voorhees had a standout junior year for Brick, averaging just under 15.1 PPG with 5.3 RPG, 2.5 SPG, 1.5 BPG and 1.9 made threes a game. She was Brick’s best overall player last season, scoring nearly 190 more points than her next-closest teammate and leading the team in six different statistical categories. She is a superstar talent, a playmaker and is going to torch offenses and create immense havoc on defense in 2021, just continuing to be as dominant as she has been.
Sydney Howell, Toms River North: Howell is an intriguing watch going into 2021 and is Toms River North’s best returning shooter, especially from the outside. She averaged 7.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 0.4 BPG and 1.6 made threes a game for the Mariners in 2019/20, numbers she is going to blow out of the water this season. Howell will be asked to very much fill in the role of graduated senior Kristina Johnson, who averaged 14.8 PPG last season for the Mariners. Howell should comfortably put up double-digit scoring numbers come January.
Julia Altieri, Central Regional: Altieri is part of a strong senior class that will be the backbone of this Central Regional team in 2021. The Golden Eagles will need her to show out on the court this season and she has already shown just how good she can be, averaging 1.5 made threes a game in 2019/20 and 6.3 PPG, but her strong suit is her outside shooting, where nearly 70 percent of her scoring came from last season. She’s one of the best pure shooters in the conference and this season, her senior season, expect her to dominate.
Summer Davis, Southern Regional: Davis had a great sophomore season for Southern Regional, averaging 6.7 PPG, 2.0 SPG and 1.1 made threes a game. She was the Rams’ best outside shooter in 2019/20 and that trend will continue in 2021 where she will have the ball much more often and will be relied upon to make crucial plays in key situations. Southern, who finished 12-15 last season, needs a spark plug like Davis to make them a competitive team come January and making a few three-pointers a game, which most expect her to do as a junior, will get them there.
