This state has one of the strongest crops of talent the country has to offer and this season is expected to be one the most competitive in recent memory.
Prep Girls Hoops, leading up to this season, has been profiling the best players across the Garden State, and that continues in this article as PGH takes a closer look at the top guards in the Shore Conference, more specifically the B Central region.
Shelby Barksdale, Mater Dei: Barksdale is going to have a much bigger role on Mater Dei in 2021, coming off a year where she averaged 9.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 0.5 BPG, 1.6 SPG and 0.5 made threes a game. She is the returning leading scorer on this team and is someone who will be putting up double-digit scoring averages and could possibly put up double-double averages in 2021. With guard Katherine Zoda graduating last spring, Barksdale is the player that, in her junior season, will help carry Mater Dei to greater success on the court.
Haven Dora, Trinity Hall: Dora is one of the best passers and defensive players in the conference and she showed that during the 2019/20 season, where she averaged just over 5.0 APG and just under 4.4 SPG, along with 7.2 PPG. She is one of Trinity Hall’s most consistent scorers, but her passing and defensive prowess have added two more dimensions to her game to make her one of its most complete players going into the 2021 season.
Cassidy Burns, Point Pleasant: Burns is a proven leader and was easily Point Pleasant’s best scorer last season, averaging 14.2 PPG and leading the team with 0.6 made three-pointers a game. The Panthers are returning all of their top scorers going into 2021 and Burns is the leader of a strong senior class that is one of the most balanced in the division. She’s going to be relied upon more to score from the outside this season, so expect her to expand her range and continue to still dominate inside the perimeter for Point Pleasant.
Bella Santulli, Ranney: Santulli had a strong freshman season for Ranney, averaging 9.3 PPG and over 0.5 made threes a game. She had a smaller sample size, playing in just 15 games, but she was the team’s leading scorer and returns as Ranney’s best scoring option in 2021. It’s going to be a tough task to reverse the fortunes of a 4-12 program in 2019/20, but with the first-season success Santulli had, she’s going to make a big difference.
Mackenzie Smith, Keansburg: Smith has the opportunity to have a strong senior season in 2021 to help get Keansburg back to winning ways and she showed glimpses of greatness in 2019/20. She averaged 6.3 PPG and around 0.7 made threes a game, which are a big plus of expanding her game going into this season. Smith has a strong core of teammates around her, including sophomore Scarlet Oliva, who will be as dangerous of a perimeter shooter, and the tandem will make noise throughout the conference, so stay tuned.
