It’s an exciting time to be in the Garden State as teams across the state get ready for what will be one of the most competitive and unique seasons in recent memory.
Prep Girls Hoops has been continuing to find the best talent across New Jersey and that continues in this article as PGH profiles the top guards in the Shore Conference, specifically the B South region.
Gabriella Ross, Manchester Township: Ross emerged as a breakout star in her freshman season with Manchester Township, averaging 9.1 PPG, just under 1.1 SPG and just under 1.1 made threes a game. She was a big reason for the Hawks’ success in 2019/20 as it finished 28-4. Going into 2021, Ross returns as the leading outside shooter and one of its better defensive players. She’s going to shine beyond the arc as she did last season and Ross should be one of the better shooters across the entire region.
Jordyn Keating, Donovan Catholic: Keating returns as Donovan Catholic’s go-to scorer, someone who led the team with 13.6 PPG in 2019/20 and averaged 1.5 made threes a game. She makes it look easy shooting from the perimeter, which going into her senior season, is crucial. That, combined with 1.6 SPG, makes for a dual threat of scoring and lockdown defense that teams will be dreading to have to face come January. Keating will bump up her scoring average and should eclipse over two made threes a game in 2021.
Lila Shaver, Point Pleasant Boro: Shaver, a senior, is Point Pleasant Boro’s leading returning scorer going into 2021 and one of its best all-around playmakers. Her 9.0 PPG was second on the team to senior forward/guard combo Kate Leturgez, but Shaver was as good as it gets from beyond the arc, hitting 1.4 threes a game. PPB is coming off a rough 11-15 season in 2019/20 and with Shaver leading at the point, this team is in fantastic shape to turn heads. Expect Shaver to average anywhere from 12-14.0 PPG this season.
Maura Carney, Jackson Liberty: Carney was fantastic in her junior season with Jackson Liberty and is going to be an electric player to watch in 2021. She paced the Lions with 15.4 PPG, 2.2 SPG and 2.8 made threes a game. She was among the conference leaders in three-point shooting and that is going to return in a big way this season, her senior campaign. The Lions are going to lean on her to be the one to step up in big game situations and deliver. Carney already showed that she is a superstar in 2019/20 and her confidence is only going to grow as she continues to dominate on the court.
Kya Joseph Kya Joseph 5'7" | SG Barnegat | 2022 State NJ , Barnegat: Barnegat might have had a down season in 2019/20, finishing 8-17, but Joseph, as a sophomore, was one of the most crafty, high-octane players in the conference and became an unquestionable team leader as the season progressed. Now, as a junior, she is building off a season where she averaged a double-double with 18.3 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 1.3 made threes a game, 1.2 SPG & APG and 0.6 BPG. She balled out for the Bengals and in 2021, she’s going to put up 20-12 averages and will be one of the most intriguing guards to watch in the state.
