Continue ReadingWith the high school basketball season in California still on hold, various grassroots events have been popping up across the country to help fill the temporary void. Players from CA have attended some of these events as a means to be seen and showcase their game.
One of those events is being hosted throughout this month by The Grind Session in Phoenix, AZ. A few players from Southern California have been participating in the event, and here’s a quick look at some of them.
1. Aliyah Gonzalez – Troy 2022
Defensively is really where Gonzalez can make her mark. Applies strong pressure on ball and plays good help defense too. She picks up the ball-handler at midcourt. She’s solid in transition; can handle the ball and keeps her head up looking for her teammates. She can also get all the way to the rim. Good three-point shooter who sets her feet well on catch and shoot plays. She can also shoot with defenders rushing at her.
2. Itzel Navarro Itzel Navarro 5'6" | SG Cathedral Catholic HS | 2022 State CA – Cathedral Catholic 2022
Navarro is a very quick point guard. She can turn the corner and accelerate to the rim with ease. Strong finisher through contact. Good ball-handler who can dribble under defensive pressure. Solid court vision; keeps her head up in transition. Can find teammates in the halfcourt and on the break. She’s a good three-point shooter with a quick release; can shoot off the dribble or pull-up in transition. Good defensive player.
3. Alyssa Ke – Sonora 2021
Ke is capable of playing both guard positions. She’s a strong shooter from both the midrange and the three-point line with a quick release. Can shoot off the dribble too. She’s a very good defensive player. Applies strong on ball pressure and can force turnovers leading to fast break opportunities for herself. Unselfish player who looks for her teammates and she can run the pick and roll well.
