Midseason Awards-Fab Frosh making statements pt 1
In this article:
This list has a mixture of some of the top players in the 2024 class, again, I base things on what I see PERSONALLY and to those who don’t get me, I evaluate on the “it’s not what you do, it’s who you do it against” common sense approach so without hype or fanfare, again, my suggestion is to place yourself in a situation to be seen by me, a man whose daughter had over 100 D1 offers and has played around 8 years in the WNBA so here ya go with the first part
Gwendlyn McGrew Gwendlyn McGrew 6'0" | CG Pasadena Memorial | 2024 State TX
McGrew has made the transition with ease, she’s playing just about every position and showing signs that she can control a game on both ends. She’s athletic and has a college-ready body to go with D1 offers on the table yet the table hasn’t even been set because she’s relatively unknown across the country but that will change like the Houston weather however whether it does or not, she’s a #BCSLock with her NBAS range and acrobatic finishes
Justice Carlton Justice Carlton 6'1" | PF Seven Lakes | 2024 State TX
Carlton is about to become more famous than the doorman or the cousin of The Fresh Prince yet this princess is about to be crowned queen as she opened up her high school career with a trifecta of 30 point plus games yet when I had a chance to catch her live, she responded with a high double-double despite being doubled which caused no trouble. She’s powerful in the paint, rebounding, or finishing and does it smoothly
Ma’Riya Vincent Ma’Riya Vincent 6'0" | SF Cy Springs | 2024 State TX
Vincent has been in front of me numerous times and her progression from a couple of seasons ago when she made my Tip Sheet at initial sighting told me what was coming, it’s arriving daily as she gracefully blocks shots and pushes the ball on the break, she has nice hands and footwork around the basket, scores after contact as well as facing the basket but her defense in and outside of the paint is smothering
Kendall Sneed Kendall Sneed 5'7" | CG Hardin Jefferson | 2024 State TX
Sneed came in sending messages and with an early-season game on the line, she put the team on her back after #1 Ashlon Jones fouled out, and in a video floating around the internet, you can see the big shot from the baby, well she ain’t no baby and wasn’t one in the 6th grade when she dazzled me with her handles and moves but creating her shot, in traffic and in transition, has helped take her game to yet another level
Heather Baymon Heather Baymon 5'6" | PG Langham Creek | 2024 State TX
Baymon is one of the best “stop and pop” shooters in Texas, I’ve said that countless times but I always keep it real and when you possess the speed she has, with the ball, as well as doing things instinctively, like coming from behind players to knock the ball away as well her reactions, I knew she would get IT quickly and she has. The thing about her is that she’s under control with the blazing speed, which adds fuel to the fire
Vivian Iwuchukwu
Iwuchukwu is long and athletic, well very long and very athletic, and when I first caught her at a showcase last season, I was taken away by the little things that stood out, and by no way was she the finished product which was scary because she has the potential to control, wait, dominate games on both ends and that’s not easy from eyes and years of observing but she plays hard, she elevates for rebounds and blocks, her scoring is almost unstoppable around the basket and she’s above the rim many times, this will be interesting to watch play out
Jordan McIntosh-5’8 G (Dunbar HS)
McIntosh made my Tip Sheet a while back before high school and I said “nice athleticism, stop and pop from everywhere and that pull-up creates some problems. It’s good to be able to shoot and it’s even better to be able to catch and shoot accurately, she does the latter well” yet her explosiveness and ability to finish after contact has been added, her creating her shot under pressure has been added and she’s seeing the floor and handling the ball under pressure
Zachara Perkins-6’2 PG (St Pius HS)
Perkins would be on my Most Improved list if I had one, dropping 40 plus against a competitive team would get you there yet I’ve seen her multiple times this season and each time, she’s shown me something new. The long ball started it off, her size and range will definitely attract college coaches and I think she dropped 6 or 7 from BTA yet her poise, creating her shot, and wanting the clutch shots just set it off. She’s also been doing a good job running the 1, she’s young and it ain’t nowhere near over
