It was great to see players I have been watching throughout the summer and gain a look at others new to the radar. While both teams are very young, the Colts have two seniors and the Salthawks one, across the board the Campus players have far more experience playing varsity ball. Hutchinson was senior laden a year ago and Campus, despite only winning five games in the past two years, returned more than 90% of their varsity minutes including all but one starter.
Campus
A substantial difference in the 47-40 win was Campus’s experience and the speed, quickness, and scoring ability of the their back court. Combined they made 5 of the teams 6 threes while the Salthawks only mustered 2 and overcame being out shot from the line, only make 1/4 while Hutchinson was 12/20.
Alissa Brown, 5’7″, W/SF, 2021 – Brown defended on the point on occasion but, due to the colt’s overall lack of size, usually could be found inside. defending more athletic forwards. She was effective at keeping hands in passing lanes and discouraging entry passes. She also showed good transition speed and elevation around the basket.
Analysia Morales Analysia Morales 5'8" | CG Campus | 2022 State KS , 5’6″, SG, 2022 – Morales racked up multiple threes and spent a great deal of the night battling Salthawk point guard Harlie Wilson Harlie Wilson 5'4" | PG Hutchinson | 2022 State KS on the defensive end. Besides shooting well Morales made a couple very slick entry passes, showing off her strong half court vision.
Tya Tindall Tya Tindall 5'5" | CG Campus | 2022 State KS , 5’5″, PG, 2022 – While she ran the point Tindall generally defended Salthawk sophomore starter Brynne Ackley. Including a memorable battle with Wichita East’s Asia Dawson Asia Dawson 5'6" | SG Wichita East | 2022 State KS at the No Boundaries Athletics exposure event I have see Tindall a great deal this summer. It took awhile to get into a groove but when she was creating off the bounce, knocking down threes, and was a major reason the Colts were able to keep the Salthawks at arms length in the 4th quarter in the Colt win. Tindall has a scorers mentality and at times took some ill-advised shots that worked out.
Kara Smith, 5’6″, SF, 2022 – Smith was quiet in the first half but exploded in the third quarter to break the game open for the Colts. Generally playing the high post that quarter, she showed athleticism and finishing ability. Smith also made good decisions and quick but catchable passes on the interior.
Sadie Hubbard Sadie Hubbard 5'8" | SF Campus | 2022 State KS , 5’8″, PF, 2022 – From watching her over the summer Hubbard is a true small forward playing a power forward position due to the team’s overall lack of size. She does many things well that often are overlooked, including in this game. While she was able gather a couple baskets, she defended most of the bigger Salthawk post players. Her transition speed and defensive quickness enabled her to limit second chance opportunities and to control the ball after a defensive board.
Addie Groh Addie Groh 6'0" | PF Campus | 2022 State KS , 6’0″, C/PF, 2022 – The lanky Groh provides the team’s only bit of size. Not a dominating presence but with her wing span and hard work she took up space inside on both ends of the floor, affecting Salthawk drives and shots. Groh hustles in transition and competes on the glass.
Hutchinson
With the graduation of McKenzie “Grizzley” Hefley, now balling at Sterling College, I was wondering what Hutch would bring to the table for inside players. This year’s edition finds six young players 5’10″ – 6’2″ on the roster.
Ziya Simms Ziya Simms 5'9" | PF Hutchinson | 2021 State KS , 5’11″, PF, 2021 – Simm’s size, rebounding, shot blocking, and athleticism commanded substantial amount of attention inside. She did not have a huge statistical game, finishing with 7 points including 3/4 from the line, but the attention she garnered freed up opportunities for others.
Harlie Wilson Harlie Wilson 5'4" | PG Hutchinson | 2022 State KS , 5’7″, PG, 2022 – I have enjoyed watching Wilson’s development over the past two years and was able to watch her play this past summer as well. And with Gabbie Posch Gabbie Posch 5'9" | CG Hutchinson | 2020 State KS ’s graduation, now at Newman University, Wilson is the most skilled, experienced, and effective guard on the team. Despite only scoring two points Wilson showed the ability to run a two-on-one break well, to create for others, and defend in the half court.
Hannah Ames Hannah Ames 5'11" | PF Hutchinson | 2023 State KS , 5’11″, PF, 2023 – Ames had a big night scoring 15 points while finishing 7/8 from the line. She transitioned well and was able to score around the basket after posting up. As she gets stronger and her inside physicality increases she will be one to watch.
Jaycilyn Moriasi Jaycilyn Moriasi 5'6" | SF Hutchinson | 2022 State KS , 5’6″, W, 2022 – In the past the third year varsity player often found herself playing inside due to the lack of depth the Salthawks had inside. While she has a solid build and is unafraid to battle with the bigs, her role has changed this year due to the amount of size the team has. She generally plays on the wing, which enables her to show her perimeter shooting ability.
Brynne Ackley, 5’6″, CG, 2023 – Wilson’s running mate in the back court to start with was Ackley but also played on the wing. She drew arguable the Colt’s most ferocious defender in Tya Tindall Tya Tindall 5'5" | CG Campus | 2022 State KS . She knocked down one of the team’s only three point shots and would occasionally spell Wilson at the point. As she improves her handles and gains experience she will be a player to watch develop in the coming years.
