Though I missed the first day of the tourney, I wondered the entire time how any team had managed to defeat either of these two. Both teams feature tremendous scorers and the game only got better as it progressed. In the end, Rejoice walked away 39-38 winners on a shot with just a few seconds left that put the Eagles ahead for good – ending a furious comeback by the Bulldoggers.
Game 1 Standouts
Lexi Henson Lexi Henson 5'7" | CG Rejoice Christian | 2023 State OK | 5-7 SG | Rejoice Christian | 2023 | @lexihenson228
Henson put on a show to start the game off with three three-pointers. She has a smooth shot with great elevation. She works hard all game from start to finish and clearly will do anything to win. She is a great athlete and a leader for her team. Henson finished with 15, the most for Rejoice and second-most in the game.
Cheyan McDaniel Cheyan McDaniel 5'10" | CG Dewey | 2022 State OK | 5-10 CG | Dewey | 2022 | @CheyanMcdaniel
Cheyan is an absolute freak of an athlete, rarely seen in the girls game. She is bouncy – that is to say she can elevate. She has a nice touch on her shots with a lefty lay-up and good floater. She gets to the hoop consistently with outstanding handles. She was the main reason for the Dewey comeback in the 4th quarter with 10 of her 16 total points accounting for more than half of Dewey’s total 18 points in the final stanza.
Game 2 – The second “losers bracket” game featured the home team Oologah versus Cascia Hall. Both teams started out very well, ending the first quarter tied at 12. A close game throughout was finished when Cascia suddenly went cold over the last few minutes with Oologah walking away 47-43 victors.
Game 2 Standouts
Lizzy Thomas | 5-8 SG | Oologah | 2022
Thomas is an incredible shooter. She has great length and does a great job of receiving passes in a position to get a shot off quickly. She has a nice dribble drive and is an incredibly tough defender. I haven’t found any video online of her, but coaches you owe it to yourself to take a look at Oologah and Lizzy Thomas.
Landrey Hill | 5-8 |SG | Cascia Hall | 2023
Yet another player you may have to travel to see, but well worth it. Less of a great spot up shooter (like Thomas) and more of a slasher, Hill gets to the bucket and finishes even with contact. Five of her 13 points came from the charity stripe as she constantly took it to the hoop and got Oologah into foul trouble. She is a great scorer and very fun to watch.
Game 3 – The first game on the winners side of the bracket was an absolute shooting clinic. Shots were raining in from everywhere with both teams featuring some very good scorers. From start to finish Vinita scored consistently and converted free throws at the end to seal the deal. The team from Vinita went home 53-40 winners over Pryor and advance to the championship game tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
Game 3 Standouts
Kennady Roach | 5-8 SG | Vinita | 2021 | @kennadyr_12
Roach is a scoring machine. She works her butt off all game and is the player that the coach wants to have the ball in crunch time. She has great size and is quick. She came out hot scoring almost all of her team’s points in the first quarter. Her 20 points total led all scorers. Roach is a 2021 and should definitely be targeted by any D-II or D-III coaches who need a player who is going to be an absolute scoring star.
Rhett Looney | 5-5 PG | Pryor | 2021 | @LooneyRhett
Another 2021 it would appear hasn’t committed yet and is a future D-II or D-III superstar waiting to happen. Looney is the coach on the floor and is the best player. Her range is basically anywhere within the gym and she is not scared to let it fly. Rhett had six three-pointers and threw in a regular old field goal for a total of 20 points in the game. Her defense, passing and hustle were unmatched.
Game 4 – The gym heated up as the day went on and by the time Cleveland and Oklahoma Union were done with their battle, the roof was almost ready to blow off the place. The game featured a total of 16 three-pointers between the two teams and a ton of up and down the floor action. Cleveland eventually ran away with it by a final score of 66-54 despite a valiant fourth quarter effort from Oklahoma Union.
Game 4 Standouts
Bailey Layman Bailey Layman 5'6" | PG Cleveland | 2022 State OK | 5-6 PG | Cleveland | 2022 | @bailey_layman
Y’all need to go to Hudl and check out Bailey’s tape immediately, She was absolutely the best scorer that I saw all day. To go along with her five three-pointers, she also did a great job of drawing contact while fighting her way to the basket. She had eight of her 27 total points from the line. She can shoot from every level and is a hard-nosed tough player who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty.
Rylee Lemos | 5-6 CG | Oklahoma Union | 2022 | @rylee_drew6
It looks like Rylee may be planning to play college softball instead of basketball as she is a very skilled player who plays on some very good softball teams. However, if she were to choose basketball, she will have a place on a college team. She is a very strong and athletic player who can absolutely shoot the lights out. She had 20 points in the game with four three-pointers. She is a tough defender who brings the softball mentality to the court and challenges every pass in to her opponent and just generally makes life miserable for them.
