Practices will be starting next week, which is extremely exciting as basketball will finally return, in some fashion, to basketball courts across the Garden State.
Prep Girls Hoops is your source for New Jersey high school girls basketball content and has been profiling the best talent up and down the state.
That continues in this article as PGH takes a closer look at the top forwards this season in the Shore Conference, focusing on the A South region.
Zoie Maffei, Jackson Memorial: Maffei has a fantastic opportunity in front of her as a senior-heavy Jackson Memorial team graduated three of its five best rebounders and scorers, including its best scorer and rebounder during the 2019-20 season. She comes into this season as the leading returning rebounder for the Jaguars and she had an impressive freshman season, averaging 4.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 0.9 BPG and 1.5 SPG. There are a lot of holes that need to be patched up for this team, and Maffei is going to play a huge role as the main presence in the middle and now as a sophomore, has double-double potential.
Jaclyn Benvenuto, Toms River North: Benvenuto was one of the leading rebounders in the region last season and will be among the leaders again, including North’s leader on the boards. As a sophomore, she averaged 6.8 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 0.7 BPG and 1.2 SPG for the Mariners and will be one of two impact forwards for North this season. She and fellow junior Georgia Pissott, who averaged 2.2 BPG during the 2019-20 season, will be a dual threat and a nightmare for a lot of future opponents. Benvenuto should average 10+ rebounds a game this season and is another double-double candidate.
Kayla Krzykowski, Central Regional: Kryzkowski, a junior, was an exciting watch for Central Regional last season as its main inside presence and that will be felt that much more this season. She averaged just under 8.0 PPG, 6.7 RPG, and 1.2 BPG for the Golden Eagles during the 2019-20 season, finishing as the team’s second-best scorer. She returns in the same place, but will challenge senior guard Jadelynn Smith for that title this season. Kryzkowski has a knack for controlling the boards and being in the right place at the right time, not to mention her shot-blocking prowess, so she will be an anchor of this Golden Eagle team.
Ella Moore, Brick Memorial: Moore enters her junior season as one of two go-to scorers on Brick Memorial along with senior Alexis Voorhees, but Moore’s presence will be felt much more in the paint. She put up great numbers as a sophomore, averaging 8.0 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 2.8 APG, 0.4 BPG and 1.8 SPG. Having already eclipsed the double-digit plateau in rebounding, scoring is next for her and she should put up double-double averages this season with relative ease. Moore is an impact player and with three key seniors gone in 2021, she is going to really expand and improve all facets of her game.
Kelle Anwander, Toms River South: Anwander was one of the leading shot-blockers in the conference last season and is on pace to single-handedly dominate the category during the 2021 season. She averaged 12.0 PPG, 9.5 RPG and 2.6 BPG for Toms River South during the 2019-20 season, solidifying herself as the team leader and a superstar throughout the region and conference. We could se 15-12 numbers with 4.0 BPG from Anwander this season as now, in her senior season, she is looking to end her high school career with dominance.
