Continue ReadingThe high school basketball season has been postponed until at least mid April with a potential of cancellation if things do not turn around here sooner than later. These are unfortunate circumstances as so many hard working players and talented teams were vying for a state title. The WIAA has made it clear they are doing their best to have a season while working with the state’s restrictions. It was also announced that there will be no state championships for the 2021 condensed season, if there is one. One can only help but wonder who would have been the top team in the state for the 2020-2021 season had things played out as usual. My pick? The Woodinville Falcons. The four major factors on the floor are detailed below and I believe this along with Coach Scott Bullock’s outstanding coaching, the Falcons have/had the recipe to win state.
The Two Headed Monster
Woodinville is led by its two stars in 2021 5’11 PF Montana State signee Mia Hughes Mia Hughes 5'11" | PF Woodinville | 2021 State WA and 2022 5’8 PG Veronica Sheffey Veronica Sheffey 5'8" | PG Woodinville | 2022 State WA who holds multiple Division 1 offers. These two players have been involved with deep state playoff runs in each year of their high school career, including Hughes who was a member of Woodinville’s runner-up finish against the legendary Central Valley 2018 squad. Despite being favorites to win last season, Woodinville was once again taken down by Central Valley in the 2020 4A state title game. Hughes dominates the game inside offensively and she defends and rebounds so well. Sheffey handles pressure, attacks the basket and knocks down the outside shot. She is also a very good on ball defender with her lateral footwork. A perfect compliment to one another. I believe the hunger and sense of revenge for the Falcons would have taken them over the top this season and they would have taken home the championship trophy at last.
The X-Factor
2022 5’11 SF Tatum Thompson Tatum Thompson 6'0" | SF Woodinville | 2022 State WA is like a swiss army knife with her ability to do it all on the court. If Thompson steps up as a consistent third double digit scorer and is a bit more aggressive looking for her own shot, that makes Woodinville an extremely difficult out for any opponent. Thompson has great length and athleticism at 5’11.
The Shooter
2023 5’10 SF Brooke Beresford Brooke Beresford 5'10" | SG Woodinville | 2023 State WA is a player with a strong frame and excellent three point shooting ability. Her ability to stretch the floor and get hot at times is a major factor for this team. She can rebound and defend in the post or wing some as well. If she gets hot in one or two state tourney games, this squad is close to unbeatable when you add in Hughes dominating inside and Sheffey doing what she does at the point guard position.
