The Lady Mikes had held opponents to a measly 20.0 PPG over its first three games, beating opponents by a margin of 67.7 points a game, over three times that of its opponents’ total scoring average.
To say Trenton Catholic was good to start the 2021 season is an understatement: this team had been nothing short of dominant on both sides of the ball. That was the case at least until the Lady Mikes faced Stuart Day on Feb. 9.
Stuart Day is one of the best programs in the state and has been in recent memory. On the 9th, it gave Trenton Catholic a run for its money, trading blow for blow on the court into the fourth quarter as the game was tied, 49-49 with just over three minutes of game left on the clock.
While the score was tied, the tank was far from empty as star sophomore guard Zoe Brooks Zoe Brooks 5'8" | CG St. John Vianney | 2023 State NJ jump-started the team with a crucial and-one play in the paint, and Trenton Catholic finished the game on an 8-0 run to win, 60-55 and improve to 4-0 on the season.
Many thought that loss would wear on the team going into its next game on Friday, a clash with a highly-competitive Hudson Catholic team.
However, the Lady Mikes dominated from start to finish, beating the Lady Hawks by 23, 68-45. Brooks was once again the star on the floor, finishing Friday’s game with a 27-point, 10 rebound double-double and three steals.
She was one of two players on Trenton Catholic to record a double-double in the win, the other being 6-6 sophomore forward Aaylah Del Rosario. Del Rosario recorded her fourth of the season, scoring 18 points and hauling in 12 rebounds while leading the team again with three blocks.
Now, Trenton Catholic has quite the difficult schedule in front of them, with Paul VI and Mater Dei waiting patiently to take the Lady Mikes on.
However, its biggest test will come on Feb. 26 as Trenton Catholic will take on St. John Vianney, a heavyweight title fight of what most believe are the two best teams in the Garden State.
The Lady Mikes have been battle-tested these last two games and have more than lived up to the expectations of those around the state.
This team is incredibly good and when Feb. 26 rolls around, oh boy are we in for one the best game of the past few years, guaranteed.
