The Mustangs won’t be able to participate in this season’s Shore Conference tournament, but what this program was able to accomplish over the past month was its best start to a season since going 7-1 to start the 2013-14 season.
Marlboro’s 0.889 winning percentage ranks among the best in program history and this season saw three players put up double-figure scoring averages.
Junior guard Dani Schlesinger Dani Schlesinger 5'9" | CG Marlboro | 2022 State NJ led the team in scoring, averaging 13.0 PPG and not far behind was senior guard Sammy Jay, who averaged 11.9 PPG and senior forward/center Jessica Riepe, who averaged 11.0 PPG.
The three combined to average 35.9 PPG for the Mustangs, who averaged 56.1 PPG on offense and 58.5 PPG in its eight wins this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, Marlboro held opponents to 37.1 PPG and had four games this season where the Mustangs didn’t allow 30 points in a game and two where opponents scored less than 20 points.
If you wanted any more proof that Marlboro was among the best teams in the state, look no further than their 68-64 win over Saddle River Day, where sophomore Erica DiSimone scored a career-high 26 points and Jay scored 23 points in the victory.
The season unfortunately ended on a sour note aside from Covid as the Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season, a 47-37 defeat at the hands of Middletown South.
Head coach Brad Hagensen will be seeing some significant senior departures from the program in Jay, Riepe and Laura Morehead, but a lot of turnover as well with eight of 11 players returning for the 2021-22 season as of now.
Marlboro’s expectations have now been set after the immense success of the past several seasons and the Mustangs’ ultimate culmination of that success in 2021.
The good times are going to keep rolling for the Mustangs for years to come, so expect them to continue to compete with the best in the Shore Conference and across New Jersey.
