Splash Sisters: Part I
Many athletes in this region can put on a laser show from downtown. Watching players hit jaw-dropping three-pointers repeatedly is wildly entertaining. Long-range shooting is also a skillset that requires an endless amount of practice time and repetitions and speaks to a player’s work ethic. Here are a few dangerous sharpshooters in New England.
Bri Frongillo – Hopedale High/Bay State Jaguars/Bryant University Commit – 5’3” – PG – 2022 (pictured above)
Frongillo is an electric factory when she crosses halfcourt. She is not just a proficient shooter but one of the best scoring point guards in Massachusetts. At 5’3”, Frongillo does not have the height to shoot over the defense, so instead uses a plethora of isolation moves off the dribble to create separation to shoot. She can put on a show from behind the arc, and Frongillo is one of the best shot creators you will witness. She will shoot and hit off of dribble handoffs, stagger screens, or will comfortably step into three-point attempts if the defense is playing off her when bringing the ball up. Off the ball, the well-conditioned Frangillo is continuously moving and runs the defenders off screens, freeing her up for catch and shoot opportunities on the wing. Her innovation mixed with a rapid-fire release make Frangillo a fascinating player to watch and one of the most challenging point guards to defend in the region.
Ana Von Rumohr – The Rivers School/Mass Huskies – 5’10” – SG/SF – 2022
Von Rumohr’s shot preparation is what separates her from a lot of catch and shoot threats. If you watch her off the ball, she has a great sense of floor spacing and stays low with her hands out, ready to fire when the ball is swung in her direction. Von Rumohr gets the ball out quickly, and she is excellent at nailing shots contested. Her ability to shoot over an aggressive closeout speaks to her concentration and focus. Her 5’10” frame attributes to her being able to successfully hit over the defense as well. Two situations where Von Rumohr’s three-point specialty is crucial are in transition and pick and roll action. Rivers has excellent rim running bigs who can suck the defense into the paint, opening up the perimeter for the trailing junior wing in transition. You can put Von Rumohr in the corner where she is automatic and can be the beneficiary of penetration and kick-outs from the ball handler off the initial screening action.
Carley Hill – New Hampton School – 5’5” – SG – 2021
Hill has picture-perfect shooting form and possesses a lightning-quick trigger. New Hampton has so many great playmaking guards that draw the defense that it leaves Hill with wide-open looks that she buries with ease. The senior is a perfect complement for any team because of her ability to spread the floor, catch fire like no other player and change the game’s complexity with her long-range bombs. Her 7 three-pointer game against Proctor Academy was evidence of this. Hill set the tone with 3 threes in the first quarter, with one coming off a pin-down screen. Watching her run off screens, Hill sets up her defender and comes off the pick hard and ready to shoot. She gets in such an offensive rhythm that the lethal shooting guard will display her unlimited range and pull up from all around the perimeter. One of NEPSAC’s deadliest shooters who never fails to impact a game from deep.
Chloe Richardson – Norwell High/ MT Elite Ducks – 5’8” – SG/PG – 2023
I have never seen someone shoot more confidently than Richardson does when there is a hand in her face. One of the most efficient snipers, Richardson fires up threes unphased by the defender closing out to her. What is great about the sophomore guard is that the higher the stakes, the better she performs. In Norwell’s 50-45 win vs. Rockland in the South Shore League (SSL) finals, Richardson went 4/5 from downtown, and she was hitting nothing but the bottom of the net. The three-point specialist spaces the floor well, and she is valuable for any team with perimeter players who are strong penetrate and kick players. Opposing defenders can’t help off of Richardson when she is spotting up because of her rapid quick release and elite precision; the sophomore will make you pay every single time you give her a little bit of daylight.
Abby Martin – Whitman-Hanson/MT Elite Ducks – 5’10” – PF – 2022
Martin is a terrific combo forward who does everything well. She is such a tough-nosed defender and rebounder that her smooth long-range shooting stroke can get lost in the shuffle. Martin is an excellent stretch 4 who can destroy defenses in pick and pop action. Martin is also a valuable player to have on the floor against a zone because she can camp out in the corner and feast off slow defensive rotations and light it up from deep. Martin moves well without the ball, knows the importance of spacing the floor, and her constant movement helps lose the defense resulting in bare open looks from around the arc. Her ability to shoot confidently and draw the bigger forwards out of the paint, combined with her playmaking and elite post defense, confirms that she is one of the more complete players you will watch.
