There will be a state tournament, but who’s going to win it?
In this article:
It’s official: As long as the pandemic numbers continue to trend in the right direction there’s going to be a state tournament. That was the word that came out of the Minnesota State High School League meeting on Thursday, news that was greeted across the girls basketball landscape with a resounding, “Yeeeesssss!!!!!” Yep, the kids were excited. And their coaches. And their parents. And us, too. Now that there’s officially a chase for championships, who are the early favorites to win?
Regular season play began just three weeks ago, so it’s still early. But in a shortened season consisting of a maximum 18 games per team, we’re already a quarter of the way home and there are some trends emerging. There have been some surprises, too. Minnetonka almost beat Hopkins. Almost. Wayzata got off to a slow start. Very slow. But much of the first quarter has gone according to form. With the always-looming possibility of a COVID-related time out, every team is somewhat vulnerable.
The thing you really have to think about when trying to deduce whether a team has a legitimate shot at winning a state championship is what section they are in. That’s why Wayzata, for example, isn’t in our list of 10 favorites. Being from section 6 – the same section as Hopkins – means their chances of getting out of section play and on to the big dance are slim. If the Trojans resided in section 7 or 4 or 5 they’d have to be considered a contender. Conversely, our list contains three squads from section 2 – Minnetonka, Chaska and Eden Prairie – any of which are capable to advancing to the state tournament.
With all of that as a backdrop, these are the teams we currently deem the most likely to win a state championship.

BEST OF THE REST
Picking favorites in the smaller classes is always a bit of a crapshoot. Even though many more teams now make their games available online, there aren’t enough hours in the day to see the 270-odd teams that compete in Class 2A and 1A across the state. We have only watched a handful so far – no Albany, no Minneota, no New London-Spicer, no Sauk Centre. In other words, this isn’t an all-encompassing list. Among those we have seen, these are the teams that have impressed us the most in 2A. We’ll leave 1A aside for now since our sample size is way too small.
