Stopping one great player is difficult enough to do. Stopping two on the same team becomes even more of a daunting task.
There are some great duos in girls basketball in the state. Having a deadly duo can really enrich a team. Let’s take a look at some of the top duos in New Jersey girls basketball.
Saniah Caldwell Saniah Caldwell 5'8" | PG Saddle River Day | 2022 State #52 Nation NJ /Paulina Paris, Saddle River Day: Caldwell and Paris, two juniors out of state power Saddle River Day, are going to be incredibly difficult for any defense to contain this season. Caldwell is a force on both ends. She can do it all on the floor and she is a floor general. Caldwell leads the team with 18 made free throws. Paris is perhaps the most lethal shooter on the team, as she leads Saddle River Day with 11 3-pointers. She has averaged 28 points per game in the team’s 3-0 start.
Alexis Davis Alexis Davis 6'0" | SF Woodbury | 2023 State NJ /Karma Payne, Glassboro: Davis and Payne have been tremendous sophomores for Glassboro early on. Davis is putting up some big-time numbers with 30.4 points per game, 17.6 rebounds per game, 3.6 steals per game and 3.2 blocks per game. Payne has also been a very capable scorer and rebounder. She is averaging 16 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game for Glassboro in its 4-1 start. Payne is also making an impact on the defensive end with nearly four steals a game.
Eniya Scott Eniya Scott 5'6" | PG Bayonne | 2022 State NJ /Jolyssa Moody, Bayonne: Scott and Moody are two junior guards that can really make a major impact. Both players can score from the perimeter, rebound and get teammates involved. Defensively, they are also two of the top players on the team. Bayonne’s success this season will be heavily dependent on these two playmakers.
Aaryn Battle Aaryn Battle 5'8" | SF Camden Catholic | 2023 State NJ / Kassidy Thompson Kassidy Thompson 5'9" | SG Camden Catholic | 2023 State NJ , Camden Catholic: Battle and Thompson, both sophomores, have been key in Camden Catholic’s 4-0 start. Battle has been the top scorer with 21.3 points per game, and she is averaging five assists and five steals a game. Thompson has also been an effective scoring threat, as she is averaging 17.3 points per game. She opened the season with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds against Cherry Hill East.
Ella Fajardo Ella Fajardo 5'4" | PG Gill St. Bernard's | 2021 State NJ , Caileigh Walsh Caileigh Walsh 6'3" | PF Gill St. Bernard's | 2021 State #67 Nation NJ /Gill St. Bernard’s: Fajardo and Walsh have been a great 1-2 punch for Gill St. Bernard’s the last few years. Walsh is one of the most dominant players in the state, especially down low. The Northwestern commit is a double-double machine, and she is a defensive force with her ability to block shots. Fajardo is a great two-way player as well, and she is one of the top players from the perimeter on the team. She brings great energy and can have strong scoring nights. Fajardo and Walsh will be key in Gill’s success this season.
Zanai Jones Zanai Jones 5'5" | PG Hudson Catholic | 2021 State NJ /Kayla Beckford, Hudson Catholic: Jones is an all-around threat for Hudson Catholic, the team to beat in Hudson County this year. She is averaging 16.3 points per game. The senior can score, facilitate and make plays on defense. Beckford, a junior, has hit double figures in five of her six games. She had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds against Bayonne. Beckford leads the team with 19 free throws, and she has knocked down 10 3-pointers thus far.
Rachel Capua Rachel Capua 5'9" | SG Jackson Memorial | 2021 State NJ /Lexi Linton, Jackson Memorial: Capua and Linton, two seniors, have been superb for Jackson Memorial in its 3-0 start. Capua is averaging 22 points per game, and she has 12 steals through three games. Linton is averaging 22.3 points per game, and she has 14 steals thus far. Both of these players can score at will and are a deadly duo.
Mary Elizabeth Donnelly/ Brooke Hollawell Brooke Hollawell 5'6" | PG Manasquan | 2022 State NJ , Manasquan: Donnelly and Hollawell have been massive for Manasquan in a strong 5-1 start, with victories over St. Rose and Manchester Township (twice). Both juniors have looked strong thus far for a very balanced and loaded Manasquan group. Donnelly has three double-doubles thus far. Hollawell is averaging 12.3 points per game and has knocked down 11 3-pointers through six games.
Tyonna Bailey Tyonna Bailey 5'10" | CG Montclair Immaculate | 2023 State NJ / Jayden Watson Jayden Watson 6'1" | SF Morris Catholic | 2021 State NJ , Morris Catholic: Bailey and Watson have been excellent for a Morris Catholic squad that is 4-0. Bailey, a sophomore, is off to a sizzling start with 21.5 points per game, 12.8 rebounds per game and five assists per game. Watson is averaging 19 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The senior has recorded a double-double in three of four games, including 24 points and 10 rebounds against Villa Walsh.
Zoe Brooks Zoe Brooks 5'8" | CG St. John Vianney | 2023 State NJ /Aaylah Del Rosario, Trenton Catholic: Brooks and Del Rosario are two of the top sophomores in the state, and a big reason why Trenton Catholic is such a tough team to take down. They feed off each other very well. Brooks can do it all with scoring, rebounding, distributing and getting steals. Del Rosario has been a top rebounder with 10.8 rebounds per game.
